Tasting notes

A major sleeper of the vintage and one of the best d’Angludet’s I have ever tasted, this Margaux displays loads of red and black fruits, licorice, tar and floral notes in a medium to full-bodied, supple, hedonistic style. The acid is low, the fruit high, and the tannins sweet and well-integrated. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.

Tasted at the Margaux UGC. This has quite a broody nose at first, taking a few minutes to unwind. A blend of 12% Petit Verdot, 38% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, this has a blackcurrant, a touch of iodine and crushed stone that displays fine precision and fruit purity. The palate is medium-bodied, furry tannins, lacks a little freshness on the mid-palate with some savoury notes dominating the finish, I suspect from the Petit Verdot. Rather introverted at the moment and the finish is rather dry. Hopefully this will flesh out during barrel ageing. Tasted March 2010.

Once again a sleeper of the vintage, the fresh, broad, fat, fleshy 2009 d’Angludet exhibits attractive floral, charcoal, smoky black raspberry and cherry notes, a delicious, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, an endearing freshness, and a heady finish. Drink it over the next 10-15 years. (Tasted two times.)

Tasted at the Union de Grand Cru in London. The d'Angludet 2009 has a slightly reticent nose that demands coaxing from the glass, but it opens nicely with some pure blackberry, raspberry and a touch of graphite. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins, silky smooth and somehow reminding me of a New Zealand Cabernet! Harmonious and refined on the finish, this is a delicious 2009 Margaux. Tasted October 2011.

Served blind at the Southwold 2009 tasting. Another impressive showing from the perennially good value d'Angludet. The '09 boasts one of the most alluring aromatics in the flight of blind Margaux wines with fragrant dried violet and dark plum aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, gently gripping tannins, whilst the finish shows fine finesse and persistency in the mouth. This is impressive. Tasted January 2013.

About the Producer

Château Angludet is a wine estate located in the Bordeaux region, specifically in the Margaux appellation in the Médoc, on the left bank of the Gironde River. The estate is managed by Benjamin Sichel, who passionately adopts biodynamic practices to craft exceptional red wines. Benefiting from the protective effect of the Gironde Estuary, the vineyard of Angludet has a rich viticultural heritage that spans over 300 years. The vineyard expresses the terroir to its fullest, characterized by sandy gravel soils that are particularly well-suited for grape cultivation. It is one of the oldest properties in the Médoc. Starting from 2017, Benjamin Sichel decided to incorporate three different species of fruit trees. A succession of apple trees, peach trees, and plum trees now accompany the vineyard work. Today, there are over 200 trees that have become an integral part of the viticultural landscape of Angludet.
