Tasting notes

The 1994 has avoided the hollowness and toughness demonstrated by the less worthy examples of this vintage, producing a wine with excellent color saturation (dark ruby), a soft, ripe, generously fruity, totally charming style that offers ripeness, a silky texture, and very good to excellent concentration. With no hard edges, the 1994 d'Angludet will provide delicious drinking when released later this year. It should keep for 10-12+ years. This cru bourgeois estate can frequently be counted on to make wines as good as many of the Margaux appellation's classified growths. All of the wines in this segment were tasted between March 19 and March 28 in Bordeaux. Most of the important wines from both the 1994 and 1995 vintages were tasted three separate times during my ten-day stay in Bordeaux.

Proprietor Peter Sichel has turned in a pleasingly proportioned, sweet, supple 1994 with admirable ripeness, medium body, and firm tannin in the attractively long finish. It should be drinkable early, and keep for 12-15 years.

This was not a good showing for this wine. The 1994 d'Angludet possesses attractive blackcurrant fruit, but since bottling, it appears to have gone into a shell, revealing hard, astringent tannin that dominates the wine's fragilely concentrated sweetness and ripeness. The wine is medium-bodied and spicy, but very austere. Will it return to its pre-bottling form?

About the Producer

Château Angludet is a wine estate located in the Bordeaux region, specifically in the Margaux appellation in the Médoc, on the left bank of the Gironde River. The estate is managed by Benjamin Sichel, who passionately adopts biodynamic practices to craft exceptional red wines. Benefiting from the protective effect of the Gironde Estuary, the vineyard of Angludet has a rich viticultural heritage that spans over 300 years. The vineyard expresses the terroir to its fullest, characterized by sandy gravel soils that are particularly well-suited for grape cultivation. It is one of the oldest properties in the Médoc. Starting from 2017, Benjamin Sichel decided to incorporate three different species of fruit trees. A succession of apple trees, peach trees, and plum trees now accompany the vineyard work. Today, there are over 200 trees that have become an integral part of the viticultural landscape of Angludet.
