Tasting notes

A sleeper of the vintage, this 2005 seems to be close to its plateau of maturity. It exhibits a dense ruby/plum/purple color, wonderfully sweet and silky tannins, loads of blackcurrant and floral-infused fruit, medium body and a long, layered, elegant and pure personality. It is drinking quite well and exhibiting no reason to extend its aging. This wine should continue to offer gorgeous and good-value drinking for another decade.

A sleeper of the vintage, d’Angludet’s 2005 displays sweet cassis fruit intermixed with licorice, charcoal, truffles, and loamy, earthy notes. Supple tannin, explosive fruit richness, outstanding ripeness, freshness, purity, texture, and length suggest this beauty should be enjoyed during its first 15+ years of life.

This was a crushing disappointment, one of those 2005's that has been pushed too far. A deep, opaque purple hue. The nose suggests very high extraction with oodles of ripe, vanillary cassis and liquorices. Ultra-smooth on the lavish entry, very sweet ripe black fruits that end up being just a tad cloying. Needs more tannins and acidity. Overdone. Tasted April 2006.

I don’t believe I have ever tasted a better d’Angludet than this 2005. It reveals an inky/black/purple hue as well as an explosive bouquet of road tar, blackberries, cassis, underbrush, and forest floor characteristics. Medium to full-bodied with sweet tannin, copious glycerin, and a heady finish, it is a sumptuous, atypically forward 2005 to consume during its first 12-15 years of life.

A sleeper of the vintage, this well-known, non-classified growth is a deep ruby/purple-colored effort revealing notions of roasted meats, black truffles, licorice, and loamy earth. Sweet tannin, a rich, chocolaty, black currant fruitiness, medium to full body, and terrific freshness and vibrancy provide a gorgeous early appeal. It will be even better in 3-4 years, and should last for 15 or more.

Tasted single blind at Southwold. This has a ripe plumy and fig scented nose with signs of sur-maturite. The palate is structured, disjointed though with a dry finish. The oak is not well integrated here. Disappointing as it was in barrel and I much prefer the recent 2008. Tasted January 2009.
About the Producer
Château Angludet is a wine estate located in the Bordeaux region, specifically in the Margaux appellation in the Médoc, on the left bank of the Gironde River. The estate is managed by Benjamin Sichel, who passionately adopts biodynamic practices to craft exceptional red wines. Benefiting from the protective effect of the Gironde Estuary, the vineyard of Angludet has a rich viticultural heritage that spans over 300 years. The vineyard expresses the terroir to its fullest, characterized by sandy gravel soils that are particularly well-suited for grape cultivation. It is one of the oldest properties in the Médoc. Starting from 2017, Benjamin Sichel decided to incorporate three different species of fruit trees. A succession of apple trees, peach trees, and plum trees now accompany the vineyard work. Today, there are over 200 trees that have become an integral part of the viticultural landscape of Angludet.
