Tasting notes

Completely blind for Wine International. An herbaceous leafy nose. A bit foursquare but clean. A high toned, slightly tart palate with some nice raspberry fruit. But overall it lacks character and breeding. Tasted April 2005.

Undoubtedly the finest d'Angludet since the 1989, this black/purple-colored wine exhibits delicious cassis fruit aromas in the nose, excellent structure, wonderful sweetness, and an inner-core of ripe fruit. Medium-bodied and pure, with moderate tannin, this beauty is undoubtedly a reasonable value for its quality level. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2016.

The 1995 exhibits a dark ruby/purple color, more ripeness than the 1994, lower acidity, a silky smooth attack and mid-palate, and some attractive fat and ripeness in the moderately long, medium-bodied finish. There is an inner-core of ripe fruit, as well as an expansive texture. If the wine does not lose its focus or precision, it should drink well when released, as well as over the following 10 years. This cru bourgeois estate can frequently be counted on to make wines as good as many of the Margaux appellation's classified growths. All of the wines in this segment were tasted between March 19 and March 28 in Bordeaux. Most of the important wines from both the 1994 and 1995 vintages were tasted three separate times during my ten-day stay in Bordeaux.

The 1995 is a silky, supple, charming, forthcoming wine that is well above its cru bourgeois classification. The color is a healthy saturated deep ruby/purple, and the wine offers up gobs of jammy black fruits intermixed with subtle herbs, spice, and toast. In the mouth, the wine displays excellent richness, a layered, medium-bodied personality, well-disguised tannin and acidity, and a hedonistic mouthfeel. Anticipated maturity: Now-2010. A sleeper of the vintage.

About the Producer

Château Angludet is a wine estate located in the Bordeaux region, specifically in the Margaux appellation in the Médoc, on the left bank of the Gironde River. The estate is managed by Benjamin Sichel, who passionately adopts biodynamic practices to craft exceptional red wines. Benefiting from the protective effect of the Gironde Estuary, the vineyard of Angludet has a rich viticultural heritage that spans over 300 years. The vineyard expresses the terroir to its fullest, characterized by sandy gravel soils that are particularly well-suited for grape cultivation. It is one of the oldest properties in the Médoc. Starting from 2017, Benjamin Sichel decided to incorporate three different species of fruit trees. A succession of apple trees, peach trees, and plum trees now accompany the vineyard work. Today, there are over 200 trees that have become an integral part of the viticultural landscape of Angludet.
