Tasting notes

A dry leafy, cigar box nose, with a touch of cinnamon with tobacco and cedar. Overall the aromatics lack some vigor. The palate has moderate concentration, more body than the 1992. Quite supple for a 1994, the Merlot fleshes this wine out to make it more balanced than other 1994's but it is still very linear. Would be a good match with food, where it may show better. Tasted October 2004.

Palmer's 1994 is a successful wine for the vintage. The large Merlot component gives the wine a silky texture, and an up-front, sweet, black-cherry and plum-scented nose with toasty oak and floral scents. Medium-bodied, round, and nicely concentrated, this charming, elegant wine is well-proportioned and harmonious. Neither acidity, tannin, nor alcohol stand out in this well-balanced 1994. Drink it over the next 15 years. All of the wines in this segment were tasted between March 19 and March 28 in Bordeaux. Most of the important wines from both the 1994 and 1995 vintages were tasted three separate times during my ten-day stay in Bordeaux.

A moderately dense purple color is followed by an intense, enveloping, sweet, blackberry, plum, and floral-scented nose. Typically fleshy, with ripe, soft, medium to full-bodied flavors, Palmer's 1994 appears to be a less concentrated version of the stunning 1989. There is light tannin in the finish, but this wine's overall impression is one of fleshy, ripe, seductive fruit. If it puts on more weight and fills out (a strong possibility given Palmer's tendency to flesh out), this wine could merit an outstanding rating. It should drink well early and last for 15 or more years.

I had hoped this wine would be better, but it has turned out to be a good yet uninspiring Palmer. The medium dark ruby color is followed by a straightforward, sweet, berry-scented nose. In the mouth, the wine is medium-bodied, with decent concentration, some noticeable tannin, and a spicy, short finish. It is a good wine, but disappointing for a Palmer. Anticipated maturity: 1999-2010.

Medium color. Somewhat high-toned black cherry nose is currently dominated by lead pencil and cedar. Gentle and flavorful; has alluring perfume and sweetness in the mouth but less fat than the '95. Ripe, persistent on the finish. A very pretty Palmer.
