Palmer's excellent 1992 is as promising as the 1991. A plummy, black fruit-scented nose jumps from the glass. The color reveals fine saturation, and the wine exhibits that supple, velvety-textured richness that comes from an elevated percentage of Merlot in the blend. A sense of elegance accompanies the ripeness and generosity of this medium-bodied, plump, corpulently-styled 1992. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.

First tasted blind for Wine Magazine in May 2002. A lovely unmistakable Margaux nose. Sweet cherries and violets. Well-integrated with impressive ripeness. Hints of soy on the palate. Fine minerally core. Good length. Again a great wine for the vintage. Decaying two years later. A lean nose, lacking the intensity of the 94. Melted tar and tobacco. The palate is a lean and a bit green with a pervasive dryness. Angular on the finish. Drink up.

Palmer's 1992 revealed good ripeness and more concentration from cask samples. Now that it has been bottled, it is clear that the fining/filtration done at bottling has removed some of the delicately constructed fruit and finesse. The color is a medium ruby and the nose offers up aggressive aromas of toasty new oak, black-cherry and blackcurrant fruit. So far so good, but once past the charming, light to moderately intense bouquet, the wine's most obvious characteristics are its lightness, dilution of fruit, and lack of concentration. This medium-bodied, light wine possesses an extremely short finish. Drink it over the next 4-5 years.
