The 1988 offers a promising bouquet of ripe plums, dense, rich, concentrated fruit, and medium body, but I was surprised by the relatively compact finish. Nevertheless, this is one of the best wines of the Margaux appellation in 1988. Anticipated maturity: 1994-2006. Last tasted, 10/92.

Palmer's 1988 offers a promising sweet bouquet of ripe plums, has dense, rich, concentrated fruit, medium body, and an expansive, lush, heady finish. This is one of the best and most delicious wines of the Margaux appellation in 1988. Anticipated maturity: Now-2006.

Moderate garnet core. Nose is tight, minerally and reticent. Masculine for Palmer - more Cabernet Sauvignon in the final blend? Very tannic and slightly aggressive, lacking a little integration. Quite impenetrable at this stage. This could be better but has it the fruit to support the tannins in the long-term? Tasted October 2002.

This wine, like a number of 1988s, has matured well and is just beginning to show maturity. It has a dense, somewhat rugged constitution, with plenty of density, some earthy black fruits intermixed with licorice, compost, camphor, and roasted herbs. The wine is dense, medium to full-bodied, with some coarse tannins in the finish. I do not expect the tannins to ever melt away, but there is plenty of depth to this mouth-filling Palmer. Anticipated maturity: Now-2010. Last tasted, 5/02.

With 110 acres planted with Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc to supply the winery’s 20,000 annual case production, Palmer strives to preserve and enhance the purity of flavor and distinctive, fresh character which makes this region’s wines so unique. The state- of-the art winery contains the most modern winemaking equipment available today, and also includes substantial new French oak cooperage, purchased each year, for both barrel fermentation of our Chardonnay and the aging of our premium red varietals.
