Despite a healthy dark ruby color, this diluted, thin, emaciated wine lacks depth and body. High tannin in the finish will cause the wine to become increasingly angular, and, in all likelihood, dry out.

Palmer's 1993 is significantly richer and more concentrated than the light-bodied, diluted 1992. The 1993 exhibits an excellent dark ruby color, and an attractive, precociously developed bouquet of smoky scents, black fruits (cherries galore!), damp earth, and spices. The wine is medium-bodied, with enough ripe fruit and succulence to be considered nearly opulent. Low acidity, moderate tannin, and fine concentration have rendered this a very successful 1993. It should drink well upon release and last for 10-15 years.

Tasted at the Château Palmer vertical in London, the magnum of 1993 Château Palmer was tasted blind and turned out to be the biggest, pleasant surprise of the vertical. It has a well-defined nose: red berries, sage and a hint of fennel, expressive and terroir-driven. It gains intensity in the glass. The palate is very well defined with red cherry and cranberry on the entry, giving way to cedar and sous-bois on the autumnal, very "classic" finish. I was not the only one bowled over by the quality of this wine, shocked when its vintage was revealed. Having never tasted it before, it constitutes one of the finest Left Bank wines that I have tasted from the somewhat disregarded 1993 vintage. Tasted May 2015.

The 1993 Palmer is definitely one of the best wines of a vintage that I have ever been fond of. With dark berry fruit, cola and rose petals on the nose and touches of black truffle merging with time, this has good vigor and definition. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine grip and a sense of symmetry and focus that set it apart. Slightly granular in texture towards the finish, entirely sustained and persistent in the mouth, this Palmer is à point. Note that in magnum, it is even better! Tasted at the Palmer vertical at the château.
