Tasting notes

The 1987 La Mission remains one of the most perfumed and seductive wines of the vintage. It exhibits the smoky, tobacco, exotic character of a good Graves, and is remarkably smooth and tasty on the palate. Given its low acidity and absence of noticeable tannin, it should be drunk over the next 5-7 years. Last tasted, 7/93.

This has an attractive tobacco-lead nose with good delineation and vigour with a touch of dried blood developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied, quite simple but with an attractive cohesive middle, vibrant acidity and a light red-berried finish with a certain degree of elegance. A bit “Plain Jane” but nothing inoffensive. Drink now. Tasted May 2008.

After having consumed almost two cases of this wine, I am upset that I did not buy more 1987 La Mission-Haut-Brion. No, it is not a phenomenal wine, but it is consistently one of the most perfumed, seductive examples of the vintage. It has always been a classic example of La Mission, and of the exotic, tobacco, smoky, roasted herb character of a top-notch Graves. The wine is satiny smooth, with low acidity, lovely fresh, ripe black currant fruit, medium body and a round finish. It has continued to hold at its plateau of maturity, revealing no signs of cracking up. Anticipated maturity: Now-2001. Last tasted 7/97

Delicious, but at the end of its plateau of maturity, the 1987 La Mission gave me considerable pleasure in a lighter style that is a reference point for just how seductive, perfumed., and interesting an off-year vintage of Bordeaux can be. The wine has always been supple, with plenty of smoky black fruits intermixed with a whiff of herbs and tobacco. The wine has still retained that fragrance, but in the mouth the finish is becoming increasingly attenuated. Nevertheless, I suspect magnums and larger formats of this wine could provide drinking that could possibly even hit a 90-point score from a pristinely stored large format. Anticipated maturity: Drink up. Last tasted, 9/02.
About the Producer
25 hectares of red grape varieties, including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, are planted in the traditional vineyard of the winery; the Werner family's vineyard also has 4 hectares of white grape varieties, including Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, used for Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc at different times during the Werner family's reign And the production of the original Chateau Laville Haut-Brion Blanc (Chateau Laville Haut-Brion Blanc). The Werner family's original Chateau La Tour Haut-Brion ceased production after 2005, and the 5 hectares of vineyards it owns are mainly used for the blending of the second red wine of Chateau Meixun. In terms of wine production, the winery will set up screening stations on trucks in the vineyard to screen the manually picked grapes for the first time. Fermentation is then carried out in a stainless steel wine tank equipped with a computer-controlled system that monitors the homogenization and temperature of the wine after measuring the temperature of the pressed grape juice and residue. Clarified with fresh egg whites before bottling, but not filtered.
