Made famous by Dany and Michel Rolland, Bon Pasteur was sold to the Pan family of Hong Kong (who also purchased the famous Napa cult Cabernet Sauvignon-based estate, Sloan). The attractive 2013 possesses soft acids, plum, black cherry and berry fruit, hints of minerality and floral notes, a good texture, unobtrusive acidity and medium body. This well-made Pomerol can be drunk over the next 5-7 years.

The 2013 Bon Pasteur has a pleasant, red cherry, red plum and mocha-scented nose that shows momentous definition and offers a sense of purity. The palate is medium-bodied with stringy tannin, moderate acidity, foursquare but focused with a brisk and rather abrupt finish. To be honest, there are much better wines from this estate in recent times, although it should give easy-drinking pleasure over the next 4-6 years.

The 2013 Le Bon Pasteur is super-finessed from start to finish. Silky and layered in the glass, the 2013 impresses for its bright red fruit and expressive texture. The long, caressing finish is particularly of note. The finish is laced with raspberry jam, flowers, mint and spices. Tasted twice.

About the Producer

Château Le Bon Pasteur is a Pomerol estate, known for both the lush, supple quality of its wine and its history as the family property of the renowned wine consultant Michel Rolland. The seven-hectare (16-acre) vineyard is located on the boundary with Saint-Émilion and has a wide range of soil types. It is planted predominantly to Merlot, with 15-20 percent Cabernet Franc – exact proportions are hard to measure as some plots are mixed. Some of the vines were planted in the 1950s. The grapes are harvested by hand, and are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. The wines are then aged in predominantly new French oak for around 18 months and bottled without fining or filtration. World-renowned winemaking consultant Michel Rolland took over the running of Le Bon Pasteur in 1978, although the estate had been in the family since 1920. It was sold to a Chinese investor in 2013, although Rolland remains as winemaker and estate manager.
