Tasting notes

The 2016 de Ferrand has a medium garnet-purple color and opens with notes of cedar chest and pencil shavings plus underlying red and black plums scents and a waft of bay leaves. The medium to full-bodied palate is fairly oaky and yields a firm, chewy texture and long wood-laced finish.

The 2016 Chateau Ferrand has a well-defined bouquet with blackberry, raspberry coulis and a touch of truffle; not powerful but it has decent focus. The palate is medium-bodied with a crisp opening, well judged acidity and plenty of "cool" black fruit. The oak just impinges a little towards the finish, but if that can be addressed during the élevage, then it could turn into an attractive Pomerol for drinking over the next 8-10 years.

The full-bodied 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape is a terrific effort from Domaine de Ferrand. Nearly 90% Grenache, with the balance a blend of other permitted varieties, it's concentrated and rich, with hints of allspice, anise and pepper adding nuance to the layers of ripe cherry and apricot fruit. Complex and velvety, this has it all.

Deep red. High-pitched cherry and candied lavender scents pick up Asian spice and smoky mineral flourishes with air. Sweet, densely packed red fruit preserve and spicecake flavors stain the palate, and a jolt of juicy acidity adds vivacity, firm cut and lift. Fine-grained tannins make a late appearance and lend frame and grip to a strikingly long, floral-tinged finish.

There’s a beautiful purity of fresh, mixed berries, dark plums, deep spices, as well as a gentle, coal-smoke edge. The palate has an effortless, fleshy, fine-grained texture with long, majestic tannins and a long, black-cherry finish Such purity and depth, pulling a lot of flavor with perfectly balanced acidity. Equal parts of old and young vine parcels here. No wood. The real deal. Drink now or hold.
