Proprietor Bravay has fashioned a superb 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape. It reveals sea salt, iodine, plum, fig, pepper, and garrigue characteristics in its explosive, complex aromatic display. Multidimensional, dense, ripe, complex, and rich, with abundant aromas, flavors, glycerin, and fruit, this fleshy, moderately tannic 2000 can be drunk now and over the next 12 years. The 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape, with a character reminiscent of dry vintage Port, is an uncompromising Provencal blend of wild flowers, herbs, smoke, sausage, black cherries, and berries. Medium ruby. Smoky aromas of dark berries and roasted meat. Juicy but quite tightly wound, even a bit dry, with intense, fresh flavors of dark berries and licorice. Today the tannins are in control. This seems to have closed up following the June bottling, and is not currently showing the grenache sweetness and texture it demonstrated a year ago.
