Tasting notes

Deeper in color than the 2009, yet more backwards and reserved, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape is still incredibly young and structured, with notes of black currants, licorice, crushed rock and iron, full-bodied richness, building tannin and a huge finish. It should start to be approachable in another 2-4 years and have three decades of overall longevity.

Another great success from Bravay, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape possesses a dense inky/purple color along with pure notes of kirsch liqueur, Asian spices, blackberries, plums, black cherries and garrigue. Full-bodied with more noticeable tannin and acidity, this concentrated, dense Chateauneuf is nearly as profound as the estate's 2007. Give it 2-3 years of cellaring and drink it over the following two decades. (Not yet released) Philippe Bravay fashions some of the most singular and distinctive wines of Chateauneuf du Pape. Although his Chateauneuf du Papes represent fabulous value for what they are, readers who want an inexpensive introduction to Bravay's talents should check out his two cuvees of Cotes du Rhone. There were no problems with the opaque ruby/purple-tinged 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape, which had just been bottled. This exotic red boasts notes of black truffles, roasted meats, charcuterie, incense, blackberries and black cherry liqueur intermixed with hints of roasted herbs and licorice. Full-bodied, dense and as concentrated as the estate’s extraordinary 2007, the spectacular 2010 needs 2-4 years of cellaring, and will age gracefully over the following two decades. One of my favorite small artisanal southern Rhone estates is Philippe Bravay’s Domaine de Ferrand. This 14-acre estate produces around 1,200 cases of classic Chateauneuf du Pape made from a blend of 90% Grenache and the rest Syrah, Mourvedre and Cinsault from 85-year-old vines planted in two famous lieux-dits in the northern sector of the appellation, Cabrieres and La Gardiole. The wines are aged completely in tank prior to being bottled unfiltered. Ferrand produces excellent Cotes du Rhones and both of their 2011s merit serious attention from value seekers. (94% grenache, with mourvedre, syrah and bourboulenc; raised in concrete): Vivid ruby. Complex, highly perfumed, fruit-driven nose features redcurrant, raspberry and sexy Asian spices. Sweet, suave and fine-grained, with the spicy quality following through on the red fruit-dominated palate. Densely packed but graceful and fine-grained, with firm acids energizing the long, sappy finish. This should evolve slowly and gracefully.
