One of the most impressive wines in the vintage, the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape (a tank-aged blend of 90% Grenache and the rest Mourvedre, Syrah and Cinsault) comes close to what was achieved in 2007. Showing the ripe, sexy style of the vintage in its crazy good bouquet of black cherries, black currants, garrigue, licorice and cured meats, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a stacked mid-palate, low acidity and a great finish. Drink it anytime over the coming 10-15 years.

One of the great wines of the vintage is Bravay’s 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape. It boasts a dense ruby/purple color as well as a gorgeous perfume of Asian plum sauce, licorice, roasted herbs, beef blood and sweet kirsch and black currant fruit. This impressively textured, full-bodied, pure, deep, concentrated Chateauneuf du Pape will be even better with several years of cellaring and should keep for 15+. (Not yet released) Philippe Bravay continues to turn out sensational wines at his tiny, artisanal estate of just under 14 acres. His greatest vintage to date was 2007, but he has done an exemplary job in both 2008 and 2009. Bravay also turns out two top Cotes du Rhones from his holdings just outside the appellation. A candidate for wine of the vintage, the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape (a tank-aged blend of 90% Grenache and the rest Mourvedre, Syrah and Cinsault from 80+ year old vines) is a naked expression of Chateauneuf du Pape that is pure fruit and complexity. Its dense purple color is followed by aromas of melted licorice, charcuterie, Provencal herbs, black currants, roasted meat, plum sauce, seaweed and licorice. It is incredibly complex in both the aromatics and on the palate, full-bodied and super-rich with sweet tannin and low acidity. Enjoy it over the next 15+ years. Philippe Bravay fashions some of the most singular and distinctive wines of Chateauneuf du Pape. Although his Chateauneuf du Papes represent fabulous value for what they are, readers who want an inexpensive introduction to Bravay's talents should check out his two cuvees of Cotes du Rhone. Bright ruby. A floral-accented, complex bouquet displays candied raspberry, cherry compote and spice cake, with a hint of anise in the background. Fleshy and sweet, offering deep red fruit flavors that gain power with air. A smoky note comes up on the spicy, gently sweet very long finish.
