Tasting notes

The 2019 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru is a magical wine in the making, soaring from the glass with a deep and as yet only partially formed bouquet of cherries, spices, coniferous forest floor and smoked meats. Full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, it's layered and immensely concentrated, yet simultaneously exquisitely texturally refined and complete. Long and penetrating, could this be the finest wine that Tremblay has produced to date?

Is the 2019 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru the finest wine that Cécile Tremblay has produced to date? I thought so when I tasted it in barrel, and that impression has only been confirmed on the two occasions I have tasted it from bottle. Offering up a deep bouquet of raspberries and cherries mingled with exotic spices, rose petals, raw cocoa and a beautifully integrated framing of new oak, it's full-bodied, seamless and complete, with all the depth and power of a vintage such as 2015, combined with the suave elegance and charm of a more giving vintage such as 2017. Perfumed and expansive, this impeccably balanced red Burgundy is one of the wines of the vintage and worth every and any effort to taste!

Last year, I posed the question of whether the 2019 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru might be Tremblay's best wine to date. Drinking it again this spring, I am left with no doubt. What's more, it's also one of the most compelling Burgundies produced in this great vintage. Bursting with aromas of raspberries and sweet red fruits mingled with rose petals, blood orange, exotic spices and a subtle hint of espresso roast, it's full-bodied, layered and enveloping, with incredible depth at the core, beautifully refined tannins and a long, expansive finish. Readers with bottles in their cellars should try to exercise more patience than I did.

About the Producer

Cecile TREMBLAY descends from a long line of vignerons. The story begins in 1921, with the union of Cécile’s great-grandparents, Edouard Jayer, a cooper in Nuits-Saint-Georges, and Esther Fournier who inherited vineyards from her family. Together they established and developed their own Domaine. The domaine’s vineyards were then eventually passed down to their five children. Renée, the youngest daughter, kept her share of the vineyards under métayage. Later on, Renée’s only daughter, Marie-Annick, grew the family holdings with her husband while keeping all vineyards under métayage. Cécile Tremblay, who had studied enology and viticulture in Dijon, reclaimed the family heritage and took over the management of the vineyards in 2002. A year later, Cécile bottled her first wines, Domaine Cécile Tremblay was born!
