Tasting notes

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. There is just a smidgen of overripeness on the candied nose of Cecile Tremblay’s Chapelle-Chambertin 2011, with menthol-tinged red cherry and strawberry fruit that needs a touch of more delineation. The palate is sweet and rounded on the entry with supple tannins, but there is slight tinniness on the finish that is a little distracting. I remember the 2012 being far superior.

Tremblay excelled in this vintage, and the 2011 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru is a terrific success. Bursting with aromas of plums, warm spices, sweet berries, licorice and spicy new oak, it's full-bodied, ample and layered, with a rich, fleshy profile, beautifully refined tannins and a long, saline finish. The 2011 has been open pretty much since release, and it continues to drink brilliantly today.

Tremblay’s 2011 Chapelle-Chambertin is insanely beautiful. Dark cherries, plums, menthol, hard candy, licorice and violets are all woven together in a wine of exceptional purity and finesse. Freshly cut flowers, savory herbs and violets add an attractive element of lift on the finish. In 2011, the Chapelle is simply dazzling. What a gorgeous wine this is.

About the Producer

Cecile TREMBLAY descends from a long line of vignerons. The story begins in 1921, with the union of Cécile’s great-grandparents, Edouard Jayer, a cooper in Nuits-Saint-Georges, and Esther Fournier who inherited vineyards from her family. Together they established and developed their own Domaine. The domaine’s vineyards were then eventually passed down to their five children. Renée, the youngest daughter, kept her share of the vineyards under métayage. Later on, Renée’s only daughter, Marie-Annick, grew the family holdings with her husband while keeping all vineyards under métayage. Cécile Tremblay, who had studied enology and viticulture in Dijon, reclaimed the family heritage and took over the management of the vineyards in 2002. A year later, Cécile bottled her first wines, Domaine Cécile Tremblay was born!
