Description

Redigaffi has an intense color that arouses enthusiasm and satisfy the sight, it highlights great complexity characterized by the fruity attack in the mouth leaving then “room” to tobacco and liquorice notes. Good concentration given by the pre-harvesting activity, three passages and perfect maturation reached by our grapes. Outstanding complexity. Floral notes typical of our “Macchia Mediterranea” are intense and persistent. The elegance of tannins is enhanced by the great structure and balance. Considerable extraction and good acidity.

This is the year of many transformational changes at Tua Rita. The most important of which is the death of Tua Rita founder Virgilio Bisti (Rita Tua's husband and Stefano Frascolla's father-in-law). It is also the last year that Stefano Chioccioli worked as the consulting winemaker before Luca D'Attoma would return to the post he occupied previously. (As a side note, it is the first vintage I reviewed for Robert Parker Wine Advocate after joining the publication. From this point forward, I am rescoring wines against my own scores.) I remember falling in love with the 2010 Redigaffi when I first tasted it those many years ago. Today, I find an elegant wine that is a little closed on the nose. A hailstorm on August 17th broke up a classic growing season. This wine shows freshness and some herbal overtones, but it also feels slightly more evolved and tertiary.

The 2010 Redigaffi is even more impressive with seamless integration of ripe fruit and oak spice that meet each other perfectly in the middle. It soars to new heights of elegance and power, imparting beautiful tones of black fruit, polished river stone, bacon fat and black pepper as it makes its steady ascent. The mouthfeel is fleshy and generous and there is plenty of backbone here to carry the wine forward throughout the years. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2038. Stefano Frascolla and Tua Rita have almost single-handedly put Suvereto on Italy’s winemaking map. His latest releases are nothing short of spectacular. Importer: Winebow Inc.; www.winebow.com

A very harmonious Redigaffi. Blueberry with chili powder on the nose. Full body, with ultra-fine tannins and a beautiful palate. It's a wonderfully balanced and crafted young wine. Pure Merlot. Better in 2015.

This has aromas of fresh blackberries, plum stones, asphalt and tobacco leaves. Some salty caper notes. Lovely freshness and balance here, with fine and elegant tannins. 100% merlot. Drink or hold.

About the Producer

In 1984 Rita and Virgilio realized their lifelong dream purchasing the property that became Tua Rita. The landscape and buildings on this property were a mere setting for living in contact with nature whilst farming their beloved land. Their overwhelming passion for wine actually changed their plans. The original two hectares of vineyards have been cultivated meticulously since the beginning, this rigorous and passionate care collocated Tua Rita among the most successful producers labeled as “vins de garage”. In less than a decade they had extended the property up to nine hectares, then twenty; nowadays the totality of the planted vines includes thirty hectares. Growth has been driven by Rita and Virgilio’s enduring enthusiasm and an ever-deepening awareness of the potential of this estate in the area, between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Colline Metallifere, known as Val di Cornia. On one hand the estate and the cellar had being steadily growing driven by Rita and Virgilio’s extreme commitment. On the other hand thanks to Stefano Frascolla, married to the owners’ daughter Simena, the winery’s brand awareness was expanding rapidly. Simena also got involved in the family-run business after Virgilio’s death in 2010. The estate’s name derives from the inversion of Rita Tua’s first and last name.
