Description

Redigaffi has an intense color that arouses enthusiasm and satisfy the sight, it highlights great complexity characterized by the fruity attack in the mouth leaving then “room” to tobacco and liquorice notes. Good concentration given by the pre-harvesting activity, three passages and perfect maturation reached by our grapes. Outstanding complexity. Floral notes typical of our “Macchia Mediterranea” are intense and persistent. The elegance of tannins is enhanced by the great structure and balance. Considerable extraction and good acidity.

From another hot vintage, the 2009 Redigaffi reveals a very concentrated and thick personality (which also reflects the stylistic preference of these years). The bouquet is redolent of thick blackberry preserves, charred spice and syrupy blackcurrant. There is a pretty mineral note as well with a point of graphite or pencil shaving that gives the bouquet some much needed vertical lift and linearity. Again, the wine flaunts its ripeness, but like other vintages we see in this retrospective, there are no overtly oxidized aromas. This pretty 2009 Merlot ends with elegant, almost powdery tannins.

The 2009 Redigaffi bursts onto the palate with an exciting melange of blackberries, grilled herbs, flowers, mint, rosemary and spices. It is a powerful, juicy Merlot loaded with fruit, but there is also more than enough structure to provide support. Dark notes of tar, incense and smoke add complexity on the finish. Generally I prefer Redigaffi between ages 5 and 15. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. This is another fabulous set of wines from Tua Rita, with the exception of the Syrah, which falls a bit short of its customary level. To be honest, these days I am increasingly drawn to the entry and mid-level wines at Tua Rita because of their very favorable pricing and overall value. The biggest news at Tua Rita is the return of original consulting oenologist Luca D’Attoma, who oversaw much of the planting and made the first vintages. This is rich and powerful, with loads of fruit, lots of licorice and spices. Full and very velvety . Wonderful richness and balance. What a finish. Sweet and long. Incredible. Pure Merlot. Best in 2014.

Lots of personality here, with aromas of black cherries, olives, seaweed, milk chocolate and salted plums. Velvety and ripe with caressing tannins. Full-bodied, mellow and supple. 100% merlot. Why wait? Drink now.

About the Producer

In 1984 Rita and Virgilio realized their lifelong dream purchasing the property that became Tua Rita. The landscape and buildings on this property were a mere setting for living in contact with nature whilst farming their beloved land. Their overwhelming passion for wine actually changed their plans. The original two hectares of vineyards have been cultivated meticulously since the beginning, this rigorous and passionate care collocated Tua Rita among the most successful producers labeled as “vins de garage”. In less than a decade they had extended the property up to nine hectares, then twenty; nowadays the totality of the planted vines includes thirty hectares. Growth has been driven by Rita and Virgilio’s enduring enthusiasm and an ever-deepening awareness of the potential of this estate in the area, between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Colline Metallifere, known as Val di Cornia. On one hand the estate and the cellar had being steadily growing driven by Rita and Virgilio’s extreme commitment. On the other hand thanks to Stefano Frascolla, married to the owners’ daughter Simena, the winery’s brand awareness was expanding rapidly. Simena also got involved in the family-run business after Virgilio’s death in 2010. The estate’s name derives from the inversion of Rita Tua’s first and last name.
