Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux 2010 tasting. The Tertre-Roteboeuf has an exquisite bouquet: very intense with well defined black fruit, touches of cooked meat and dried herbs and what feels like a touch of Cabernet Franc even though there is none in the blend! The palate is smooth and silky, voluptuous and sensual to the touch with lush Merlot dominating the finish. This textbook Tertre-Roteboeuf is a joy from start to finish. Tasted January 2014.

Tasted at the chateau directly from barrel, the Le Tertre-Roteboeuf has wonderful definition on the nose, much more composed and controlled than the 2009 when tasted last year. Pure black cherries, bilberry and crushed stone, great precision here, much more control of the Merlot than I was anticipating. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins, superb acidity, layers of crisp ripe berried fruits suffused with tension and mineralite. Focused and linear towards the Burgundy like, silky finish in keeping with the vintage, this is an outstanding Le Tertre-Roteboeuf for long-term ageing. By the way...it has 15.7% alcohol (and a pH 3.64.)! Tasted April 2011.

Bottled in August, the Le Tertre-Roteboeuf has a deep garnet colour. The nose is tightly coiled, much more laconic than the 2009 at this stage, but offers a pixelated bouquet of brambly black fruit (rather than the more usual red), blood orange and orange sorbet, with just a touch of crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. It is very well balanced, quite understated and perhaps subtler than either the 2008 and 2009 Le Tertre-Rotebeouf(s), with a great deal of tension towards the finish. Like a person about to utter something profound...but prefers to keep you waiting several years. Cellar this wine and perhaps broach the 2009 before considering the follow-up. Tasted November 2012.

Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Le Tertre Roteboeuf reveals notes of leather, cedar and balsamic with a core of raisin cake and unsmoked cigars. Full-bodied, the palate is firm and chewy with a lively line cutting through the dried berries and savory layers, finishing just a little warm.

Fully saturated ruby. Knockout nose combines blackcurrant, blackberry, coffee, menthol, graphite and licorice. The palate offers an uncanny combination of sweetness and penetrating power, with expansive, fine-grained flavors of black and red fruits, mint and sweet spices. The very long, rising finish conveys an impression of energy and great finesse, thanks to harmonious acids that lift and extend the wine's fruit and spices. One of the wines of the vintage: lay this one down.

The 2010 Le Tertre Rôteboeuf has an impressive bouquet with a mixture of red and black fruit, melted tar on a hot summer day, warm gravel and allspice. This exhibits very fine delineation and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, a little toasty towards the finish where the oak seems to obscure the terroir and fruit expression, even after ten years. Hopefully that will be addressed with further cellaring because otherwise this is a fine Right Bank. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal.

Saturated ruby. Deep aromas of red and black fruits, violet, gunflint, licorice and bitter chocolate, complemented by a sexy oak-derived note of hickory smoke. Large-scaled and sweet, but with terrific precision and refinement to the flavors of dark berries, chocolate, licorice and minerals. Finishes polished and long. Not as opulent or exotic as the 2009, but offers exceptional sweetness and size while managing to maintain impressive verve and thrust. A great 2010.

About the Producer
Tertre Roteboeuf is located in the Saint-Emilion region of Bordeaux, France, and is one of the top local wineries. Chateau Rotbouf owns 5.7 hectares of vineyards, mainly located in the southeast of Saint-Émilion. The soil in the garden is mostly limestone and clay soil. 80% of the vineyard is planted with Merlot and 20% with Cabernet Franc. The average age of the vines is 40 years, with some Cabernet Franc vines approaching 50 years old. The way of cultivating vines in Rotpov Winery is different. The vines are mainly cultivated in a low cultivation method, which is conducive to the formation of a unique microclimate in the vineyard, making the temperature of the vineyard higher than that of other nearby vineyards. These are conducive to the ripening of grapes. Due to the fact that the vineyards are located in cooler climates, Rotpov often delays the picking of the grapes. The picked grapes are screened, pressed, and then fermented in traditional cement vats. The wine obtained from fermentation will undergo malolactic fermentation (Malolactic Fermentation) in wooden barrels. The winery will mature the wine in new French oak barrels for 18 to 24 months. Chateau Rotbouve has reached the standard of classified winery, but the winery insists not to join the classification system. Such a decision did not affect the status of Chateau Rotbouf in Saint-Émilion or even Bordeaux at all, and the price and market demand of the winery of the chateau have always been at the forefront.
