Tasting notes

Good deep medium ruby. Wonderfully perfumed, fresh aromas of blackberry, raspberry, licorice, spices and violet pastille. Brilliantly pure and energetic, with outstanding flavor intensity and inner-mouth perfume. Still an infant today, with primary black fruits dominating. But this has the spicy, floral perfume of the greatest vintages of this wine. The ripely tannic, palate-saturating finish is wonderfully long and vibrant. Our most beautiful vintage since 1990, notes Mitjavile.

Deep ruby-red. Nose offers extravagant ripeness without coming off as cooked: black raspberry liqueur, roast coffee, minerals and dark chocolate. Wonderfully sensual and deep, with the richness of the vintage's best examples. The strong torrefaction character is leavened by the wine's sappiness and serious underlying structure. The '06 may be more graceful and charming but this boasts a truly rare sweetness for Bordeaux-not to mention alcohol close to 15%.

(85% merlot and 15% cabernet franc; tasted at the end of the malolactic fermentation) Good bright medium ruby. Sexy, superripe aromas of raspberry, smoked meat, mocha, chocolate and resiny oak. Then explosively fruity in the mouth, offering great sucrosite leavened by racy acidity. The alcohol is close to 15% but the impression is of brilliant black raspberry and dark cherry fruit and great energy. Finishes with very broad tannins and strong chocolate and coffee notes. Utterly distinctive wine.

Tasted single blind at Southwold. This showed even better than the bottle Francois opened in September. Tasted blind, it has a wily seductive, Merlot-driven nose that is just so pure with scents of violets and blueberries. The palate makes a grand entrance, real depth and immense concentration here, superb acidity, spicy dark cherry, cranberry, raspberry fruit laced with espresso and Asian spice. Seamless tannins on the finish. Iron fist/velvet glove blah…blah…blah…Drink 2012-2035. Tasted January 2009.

Tasted at the chateau. The nose is a little reticent at the moment and I would suggest might open with more decanting. Still, it begin to unfurl like a burlesque dancer getting paid by the hour: ripe blackberry, boysenberry, kirsch, a touch of cold tea and a hint of molasses. The palate is full-bodied, very well structured, understated on the entry but building beautifully towards a weight, assertive, persistent finish. Very fine tannins. This ’05 certainly has good grip and like the 2007 is texturally Burgundian with a caressing finish. Hopefully the nose will wake up with further bottle aging to match the precocity and complexity of the palate. Drink 2010-2035. Tasted September 2008.

A sensational effort, Tertre Roteboeuf’s 2005, along with the 2000, is one of the most profound wines made by Francois Mitjavile. A dense ruby/purple color is followed by a stunning perfume of sweet black currants, jammy cherries, licorice, and spice. Full-bodied and opulent with high, but remarkably sweet, velvety tannins as well as a stunning texture and a finish that lasts nearly a minute, this prodigious St.-Emilion should be drinkable in 3-4 years, and last for two decades or more. Kudos to the proprietor.

The 2005 Tertre-Rôteboeuf is a vintage that I have not tasted for several years. You would be hard pressed to discern whether you are in the presence of a great Burgundy or a great Bordeaux on the nose as it delivers exquisitely pure brambly red fruit laced with minerals. The palate is actually structured and firm, suggesting that this Saint-Émilion will benefit from further bottle age. Touches of black pepper, meat juices and sage furnish the lingering finish. This is a more "swarthy" Tertre-Rôtebouef conjured by François Mitjavile, but I can see this repaying patience. Tasted at the château.

About the Producer

Tertre Roteboeuf is located in the Saint-Emilion region of Bordeaux, France, and is one of the top local wineries. Chateau Rotbouf owns 5.7 hectares of vineyards, mainly located in the southeast of Saint-Émilion. The soil in the garden is mostly limestone and clay soil. 80% of the vineyard is planted with Merlot and 20% with Cabernet Franc. The average age of the vines is 40 years, with some Cabernet Franc vines approaching 50 years old. The way of cultivating vines in Rotpov Winery is different. The vines are mainly cultivated in a low cultivation method, which is conducive to the formation of a unique microclimate in the vineyard, making the temperature of the vineyard higher than that of other nearby vineyards. These are conducive to the ripening of grapes. Due to the fact that the vineyards are located in cooler climates, Rotpov often delays the picking of the grapes. The picked grapes are screened, pressed, and then fermented in traditional cement vats. The wine obtained from fermentation will undergo malolactic fermentation (Malolactic Fermentation) in wooden barrels. The winery will mature the wine in new French oak barrels for 18 to 24 months. Chateau Rotbouve has reached the standard of classified winery, but the winery insists not to join the classification system. Such a decision did not affect the status of Chateau Rotbouf in Saint-Émilion or even Bordeaux at all, and the price and market demand of the winery of the chateau have always been at the forefront.
