The 2020 Le Pergole Torte is a towering, vertical wine endowed with tons of pure visceral intensity. There's an explosive energy to the 2020 that is impossible to miss. Dark and layered, with striking vigor, the 2020 is a brooding powerhouse that will need a number of years to hit its stride. Time in the glass brings out the wine's inner perfume, along layers of dimension.

This latest vintage of one of Italy's most important wines has an almost choreographed delivery with dramatic pause and high crescendos as it unfolds over the palate. The Montevertine 2020 Le Pergole Torte feels initially shy, but that is a fleeting impression because its all-around intensity builds beautifully upon dark cherry, blackcurrant, spice, iris root and warm earth. Those notes are followed by a delicate floral interlude, and the wine builds upward again with a very bright and lively mouthfeel fueled by fine tannins and lovely freshness. It is fleshy and rich. This is one of the best wines from this vintage in the region for sure. Production is 30,000 bottles.

Medium to pale purplish color, bright and precise cherry fruit character with bergamot, fresh violets and black cherries. The attack is almost sour, but with firm, integrated acidity and chalky tannins. It’s velvety and ripe with a super-savory finish that has a hint of licorice, a tight-knit structure enhancing the length. Amazing polished finish. Ready to drink in 1-2 years, best after 2030.

About the Producer

Montevertein is located in the heart of the Chianti hills, in the town of Lada, Chianti, at 425 meters above sea level. The winery grows only the indigenous grape varieties of the Chianti region: Sangiovese, Canajolo and Corolino. At Montevertine, simplicity, respect, extreme attention to detail and expertise are the guiding principles that inspire our daily work. The winery's winemaking methods are very traditional and have remained so since the first harvest. Hand-picked grapes are fermented in glassed concrete vats without temperature control, and pumping is done twice daily to keep the cap of the skins moist and thus more gently extract the tannins from the skins. After racking, malolactic fermentation begins in glassed concrete vats. Once fermentation is complete, the wine is left in barrels for approximately two years. The wines are aged in 5.5 to 18 hectoliter Slavonian and Ariel oak barrels and 225 liter Ariel oak barrels. The wines of the winery are never filtered, they are bottled by gravity.
