The 1993 Le Pergole Torte was born in a weak vintage and does not show perfect balance. Specifically, I would point to the dryness and sharpness of the mouthfeel. Martino Manetti says that 1993 is among the most tannic vintages of Le Pergole Torte ever produced. Those tannins appear as dusty, linear and slightly bitter. The bouquet, however, is lightly fruity and floral and actually very likable overall. This vintage offers a lot of interesting talking points.

The 1993 Le Pergole Torte is precise, nuanced and focused in the glass, with the brightness of the cold vintage very much on full display. Finely cut throughout, the 1993 is all about nuance. Freshly cut flowers, crushed rocks, mint and rose petals are some of the signatures. Even within the context of Pergole Torte, the 1993 is delicate, understated and restrained throughout, with plenty of support from underlying veins of acidity and tannin. "At the time, we did pumpovers by hand, and I remember standing above the vats and wearing a jacket," adds Martino Manetti. The wines may have been slow to evolve, but today, the 1993 is pure class.

About the Producer

Montevertein is located in the heart of the Chianti hills, in the town of Lada, Chianti, at 425 meters above sea level. The winery grows only the indigenous grape varieties of the Chianti region: Sangiovese, Canajolo and Corolino. At Montevertine, simplicity, respect, extreme attention to detail and expertise are the guiding principles that inspire our daily work. The winery's winemaking methods are very traditional and have remained so since the first harvest. Hand-picked grapes are fermented in glassed concrete vats without temperature control, and pumping is done twice daily to keep the cap of the skins moist and thus more gently extract the tannins from the skins. After racking, malolactic fermentation begins in glassed concrete vats. Once fermentation is complete, the wine is left in barrels for approximately two years. The wines are aged in 5.5 to 18 hectoliter Slavonian and Ariel oak barrels and 225 liter Ariel oak barrels. The wines of the winery are never filtered, they are bottled by gravity.
