Tasting notes

The 1992 Le Pergole Torte is a diluted wine with less power and heft. This was another weak vintage in the Radda in Chianti area of Tuscany. Indeed, 1992 is part of the so-called "terrible twos" that includes other challenging vintages ending in two, such as 2012 and 1972. The nose presents musty aromas of forest floor, wild mushroom, dried fruit and moist earth. Fruit in this wet vintage experienced problems with mold disease and botrytis cinerea. The tannins are dry and dusty. The palate lacks pulp and fruity succulence.

One of the surprises in this tasting, the 1992 Le Pergole Torte is simply magnificent. Exotic and intense in the glass, especially within the context of the vintage, the 1992 presents a beguiling melange of orange peel, spices, sweet red cherry, tobacco and mint. Deep, pliant and generous, but with tons of freshness, the 1992 offers exceptional balance. What a gorgeous wine this is. What a gorgeous wine this is. Sadly, the 1992 is not appreciated by many in the audience. I find it striking.

About the Producer

Montevertein is located in the heart of the Chianti hills, in the town of Lada, Chianti, at 425 meters above sea level. The winery grows only the indigenous grape varieties of the Chianti region: Sangiovese, Canajolo and Corolino. At Montevertine, simplicity, respect, extreme attention to detail and expertise are the guiding principles that inspire our daily work. The winery's winemaking methods are very traditional and have remained so since the first harvest. Hand-picked grapes are fermented in glassed concrete vats without temperature control, and pumping is done twice daily to keep the cap of the skins moist and thus more gently extract the tannins from the skins. After racking, malolactic fermentation begins in glassed concrete vats. Once fermentation is complete, the wine is left in barrels for approximately two years. The wines are aged in 5.5 to 18 hectoliter Slavonian and Ariel oak barrels and 225 liter Ariel oak barrels. The wines of the winery are never filtered, they are bottled by gravity.
