The 2017 Le Pergole Torte is a wine of pure and total sensuality. I imagine the 2017 is one of those wines that will always offer tremendous pleasure. Pliant and inviting, with soft, voluptuous curves, the 2017 is off the charts gorgeous. Layers of deep Sangiovese fruit gradually reveal themselves with air. The flavors are so intense but also so primary. I wouldn't touch a bottle before age ten. Readers lucky enough to find the 2017 should not hesitate, as it is magnificent. I can't imagine anyone who loves Le Pergole Torte not wanting a good supply of the 2017 in the cellar. The 2017 has come together beautifully over the last year.

The 2017 Le Pergole Torte is another stunning wine from Montevertine. Rich and exotically ripe, with equally imposing tannins, the 2017 is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine. Today, the tannins are searingly intense, but that should not be an issue in time with aging in barrel. Interestingly, the heat and dryness of the vintage are more evident in Pergole Torte than in the Montevertine, in both the wines' flavor and structural profile.

The 2017 Le Pergole Torte is rich powerful and also quite structured. In this tasting, the 2017 stands out for its textural density and darkness, both of which are unusual for Pergole Torte. Time in the glass brings out the wine's inner sweetness and perfume as layers of fruit continue to build. Potent and resonant to its core, the 2017 is shaping up to be a fascinating Pergole Torte.

The Montevertine 2017 Le Pergole Torte is a dark and sensuous expression with a well-matched "portrait of a lady" by artist Alberto Manfredi depicted on the iconic label of this vintage. Her full, ruby-colored lips speak of the generous and abundant fruit displayed here, and her slanted mascara-lined eyes underline the heat and power of the vintage. The Montevertine school matches the character of a wine to its bottle artwork with unparalleled success. This edition reflects the heat and the dry growing conditions of the vintage, however there is more sweetness and opulent fruit here compared to the Montevertine. It's not that this wine is riper per se, it just tastes more voluptuous and soft. It finishes with elegant tannins and a long, polished mouthfeel.

About the Producer

Montevertein is located in the heart of the Chianti hills, in the town of Lada, Chianti, at 425 meters above sea level. The winery grows only the indigenous grape varieties of the Chianti region: Sangiovese, Canajolo and Corolino. At Montevertine, simplicity, respect, extreme attention to detail and expertise are the guiding principles that inspire our daily work. The winery's winemaking methods are very traditional and have remained so since the first harvest. Hand-picked grapes are fermented in glassed concrete vats without temperature control, and pumping is done twice daily to keep the cap of the skins moist and thus more gently extract the tannins from the skins. After racking, malolactic fermentation begins in glassed concrete vats. Once fermentation is complete, the wine is left in barrels for approximately two years. The wines are aged in 5.5 to 18 hectoliter Slavonian and Ariel oak barrels and 225 liter Ariel oak barrels. The wines of the winery are never filtered, they are bottled by gravity.
