The 2014 Le Pergole Torte is slender, nuanced and very pretty. It is also not anywhere as complete or memorable as it has been previously. I very much like the energy in the 2014, but several recent bottles suggest there is a high level of variation in this wine, too high for a wine of its standing and pedigree, in my opinion.

The flagship 2014 Le Pergole Torte possesses striking depth, nuance and pliancy, all in the midweight, slightly slender style of the vintage. Sweet red cherry, plum, cinnamon, dried flowers, mint, cinnamon and pomegranate infuse this super-expressive, sexy Pergole Torte.

The 2014 Le Pergole Torte has come together quite nicely since I last tasted this wine as a barrel sample shortly after the new year. The wine is now showing deeper dimension and a tighter textural constitution. Those aromas of wild berry, blue flower and crushed granite stone have come together with greater focus and precision. This wine represents a selection of the estate's best fruit. The integrity of its perfume and the brightness of the mouthfeel speak to the talented winemaking team at this celebrated winery in Radda in Chianti.

Planted in 1968, we are now coming up on the 50th birthday of the oldest vines that produce this venerated wine. The vineyard is located on the top of a perfectly round hill and with various replanting efforts over the years, the average age of the vines is 30 years old. This means they are in their prime. The 2014 Le Pergole Torte is a first selection of the property's best clusters and of course fruit selection was extremely stringent in this challenging vintage. In fact, 26,000 bottles were produced. This may not be the best vintage of Le Pergole Torte ever made, however it remains a wine of impressive ambition and personality. You only really test the ability of a winemaker in the off-vintages. This is an elegantly etched red wine that opens to a dark ruby color and intense aromas of bright cherry, violets and balsam herb. At this young age, the wine has a very distinctively perfumed quality that resembles spring flowers or tropical fruit. I feel certain that these aromas will fade as the wine takes on more volume and aging evolution. Give it a few more years of cellar aging.

A transparent wine with flowers, dark fruit and citrus fruit on the nose. Full body, firm and silky tannins and a bright and fresh finish. I love the dynamic cherry and vivid floral character. Mineral, too. Bright acidity. This is one of the best wines of the 2014 vintage in Tuscany. Auguri. Drink or hold.

About the Producer

Montevertein is located in the heart of the Chianti hills, in the town of Lada, Chianti, at 425 meters above sea level. The winery grows only the indigenous grape varieties of the Chianti region: Sangiovese, Canajolo and Corolino. At Montevertine, simplicity, respect, extreme attention to detail and expertise are the guiding principles that inspire our daily work. The winery's winemaking methods are very traditional and have remained so since the first harvest. Hand-picked grapes are fermented in glassed concrete vats without temperature control, and pumping is done twice daily to keep the cap of the skins moist and thus more gently extract the tannins from the skins. After racking, malolactic fermentation begins in glassed concrete vats. Once fermentation is complete, the wine is left in barrels for approximately two years. The wines are aged in 5.5 to 18 hectoliter Slavonian and Ariel oak barrels and 225 liter Ariel oak barrels. The wines of the winery are never filtered, they are bottled by gravity.
