A candidate for perfection and certainly one of the most impressive wines in the vintage is the 2014 Côte Rôtie La Landonne. To find this level of quality in a vintage like 2014 is mind boggling, but hats off to Philippe and Marcel. Charcoal, smoky dark fruits, peppery herbs, licorice and tapenade all flow from this incredibly full-bodied, elegant, seamless Côte Rôtie, which has lots of tannin, beautiful depth and a huge finish. It’s an awesome wine that defies the vintage!

The 2014 Cote Rotie La Landonne offers complex aromas of smoke, pressed flowers, cured meats, black olives and asphalt. Full-bodied, rich and quite firm, it doesn’t show the early appeal of the other 2014s, yet it should ultimately be the pick of the three and the most long-lived. Impressive.

The vintage-defying 2014 Cote Rotie la Landonne offers more density, depth and concentration than just about every wine I tasted from the vintage. Inky opaque colored, it offers the classic darker fruits, smoked meats and olive tapenade-like aromatics as well as full-bodied richness and a crazily thick, unctuous texture that’s hard to believe could come from a vintage like 2014. Count me impressed and hats off to the Philippe and Marcel for this incredible wine.

While the 2014 Cote Rotie La Landonne looked like the pick of the litter from barrel, now that it's in bottle, it's closed down a bit and is showing more of its stemmy, whole-bunch character. Medium to full-bodied, it's the most potent and concentrated of the La Las but considerably less charming at this point in time, with brooding, dark fruit, hints of espresso and black olive on the palate and a chewy, tannic finish. Give it at least 5 years in the cellar before checking in on it.

Dark purple. Expansive cassis, blueberry liqueur, olive paste, vanilla and candied licorice aromas are lifted by a sexy floral note and a spicy suggestion of cracked pepper. Rich and broad but surprisingly energetic as well, showing powerful thrust to the concentrated black and blue fruit, spicecake, olive and cola flavors. Very smooth and round, revealing no rough edges that I can detect. Finishes very long and sweet, with a whiplash of blue fruit and slow-building, well-knit tannins that add framework.

Super-intense, dark-stone and mineral aromas here. Coal smoke, graphite and some distinctive, sappy, herbal accents. Blackberries are swathed in black and green pepper, mocha and coffee. Cloves and other woody spices are all in the mix, too. The palate is muscular with firm tannins encompassing the punchy, black-fruit flavors. This is under lockdown for now and will need a while to settle. Try in 2025.

About the Producer

In 1946, Etienne Guigal founded Château Guigal in the village of Ampuis, the winemaking heart of the Rhône. The village of Ampuis is rich in history, with vineyards that are over 2,400 years old and buildings that still date back to Roman times, and it was here that Etienne Guigal arrived in 1923 at the age of 14. He decided to devote himself to winemaking, which he did for more than 67 years. In 1961, the young Marcel Guigal took over the management of the estate from his father. Thanks to Marcel's efforts, Château Guigal began to acquire some well-known wineries and grew in strength.
