PRODUCTION: 2,685 cases. This was a gorgeously delicious wine to drink during the first 7-8 years of its life, when I consistently rated it 88-91. It has now become diffuse and muddled with fading fruit. The color is a medium garnet with noticeable browning at the edge. Some of the famed DRC perfume of smoky oak and overripe fruit can still be found, but in the mouth the wine tastes flabby and unstructured. It is beginning to crack up, and should be drunk immediately.

Mature hew with a wide tawny rim. A very fungal nose, too oxidative for me, barnyard. The palate is a little lean, quite light and diffuse with a rather meaty core. Bacon fat on the finish. This is certainly in decline – this bottle goes to show that it is what matters inside the bottle than outside. Past its best. Tasted December 2007.

Dark purple/inky core. A wonderful fragrant nose of mocha and rusty nails though lacking the intensity of the 1980. Blackcurrants, mushroom and leather. Certainly mature and broody. A rather cumbersome La Tache, disjointed, raw and vegetal on the finish. Drink soon. Tasted December 1999.

Last Tasted 1/92 Even more aromatic than the 1982 DRC Richebourg, this rich, velvety, soft, somewhat loosely structured wine currently provides delicious drinking. There is plenty of the smoky, exotic, mineral, and oriental spice character that one usually finds in La Tache, but less grip and focus. Owners should move quickly to consume this wine.

The 1982 La Tâche Grand Cru is a vintage that I have not tasted for a number of years. It looks fully mature with a pale russet core. The palate is refined with soy-tinged red fruit and light mushroom aromas, scorched earth scents developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, quite loamy in style with a rather short finish arguably unbefitting such a propitious vineyard. Tasted at La Paulée in Beaune.

About the Producer

The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti or DRC is one of the most prestigious wine estates in the world with 25.5 hectares mostly in Vosne-Romanée on the route des Grands Crus in the vineyards of the Côte de Nuits of the Burgundy vineyards (named after the 1.8 hectare Clos de la Romanée-Conti, one of the most prestigious mythical grands crus in the world). The civil company of the same name was founded in 1942 by Edmond Gaudin de Villaine. It is now co-managed for their heir family by the winegrowers Aubert de Villaine and Perrine Fenal.
