PRODUCTION: Not available. Garnet-colored with considerable brown at the edge, this wine reveals a complex, penetrating fragrance of sweet, jammy fruit intertwined with scents of earth, animals, cooked vegetables, and spice. High acidity and an attenuated feel on the palate detract from the impressive aromatics. The wine finishes with tannin and acidity, but little fruit. It must be in serious decline.

Tasted at the La Tâche vertical at The Square. This bottle of La Tâche 1972 showed poorly, even when compared to other infamously difficult coeval vintages. Firstly it is cloudy–always a bad omen. The nose offers smudged brown sugar and cola scents with noticeable madeirization. The palate is actually better with creditable depth, but it seems to be very chaptalized and feels short and oxidized on the finish. This has little pleasure left.

This bottle of the 1972 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche was easily the finest of the three I have tasted recently. Tar, incense, truffles and deeply spiced, perfumed fruit were all woven together in a rich fabric of notable detail and class.
About the Producer
The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti or DRC is one of the most prestigious wine estates in the world with 25.5 hectares mostly in Vosne-Romanée on the route des Grands Crus in the vineyards of the Côte de Nuits of the Burgundy vineyards (named after the 1.8 hectare Clos de la Romanée-Conti, one of the most prestigious mythical grands crus in the world). The civil company of the same name was founded in 1942 by Edmond Gaudin de Villaine. It is now co-managed for their heir family by the winegrowers Aubert de Villaine and Perrine Fenal.
