Description

Sasssicaia have property that stretches over 2,500 hectares, chosen to select and plant vineyards exclusively on the most suitable lands, covering just a small area of the total surface. An area that is unique in terms of soil type, microclimate, and exposure that deserves its own appellation: DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia. The 1968 vintage saw the debut of Sassicaia, a courageous wine that at the time, broke away from the standard way of making Tuscan Wine. The wine is named after the stony soil which it comes from, and, by its nature, is destined to go far, to mark the boundaries between the different crops. Its ornamental value, with the tall cypresses running in double rows, came after that.

Tasting notes

The nose unfurls nicely in the glass with raspberry, black olive, scorched leather, loganberry and a touch of spice, then blossoms after ten minutes with a saline tincture. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, spicy on the entry with tarry black fruits and white pepper. At the moment, the 2007 is a little starched and needs time to loosen up, but it mellows in the glass to reveal an irresistible velutinous finish. Wonderful. Tasted February 2010.

The 2007 Sassicaia (Cabernet Sauvignon) explodes onto the palate with masses of rich, opulent fruit that caress the palate with gorgeous length and a seamless beauty that is hard to fully capture. Dark wild cherries, plums, spices, minerals and herbs develop in the glass. This is an especially bold, perhaps slightly uncharacteristic Sassicaia in its extroverted personality, but it is beautiful all the same. The inner perfume and sweetness carries through the long finish, where the sheer weight and glycerol of the fruit leaves a lasting impression. The 2007 is more than a worthy follow-up to the profound 2006. While it may lack that wine’s freshness, structure and potential longevity, the 2007 is immensely appealing today, and should drink beautifully pretty much out of the gate. That said, Sassicaia is always the most restrained of Bolgheri’s heavy hitters. This is a superb effort from Tenuta San Guido. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2037. Here's a wine of power, determination and confidence—as far as first impressions go. The 2007 Bolgheri Sassicaia leaves little hidden behind the curtain. It presents a frank and straightforward array of bold fruit, spice, leather and tobacco-like aromas that emerge from the bouquet with energy and force. The aromas are complete and genuine. The palate, however, offers more space for interpretation and review. It is finessed and nuanced, thus requiring more time to fully comprehend and appreciate. Silky tannins are followed by fine textural smoothness and a long finish. The outgoing nature of the aromas make for a fascinating contrast against the inward and reticent nature of the mouthfeel.

(a blend of 85% cabernet sauvignon and 15% cabernet franc) Bright red with a pale rim. Subdued, youthfully reticent nose hints at pomegranate, currant, cedar and minerals. Soft and approachable already but a bit monolithic, with lush, easygoing flavors of redcurrant, cassis, smoke and vanilla. A seamlessly ripe and broad wine, finishing with smooth peppery tannins and good length. I suspect this needs time to sort itself out in bottle but I wouldn't be surprised if this will always be remembered as a Sassicaia offering early accessibility and a little less concentration and depth than usual. Presently, it's not much better than the Guidalberto, though my experience with Sassicaia over the last 30 vintages has taught me that this wine is often disappointing when young, only to blossom about ten years after the vintage. I should also point out that I encountered quite a bit of bottle variation: one of my four samples rated 94 points, another two were 90 or 91 at best, and the fourth did not merit anything like an outstanding rating.
