The Nenin 2013 is a blend of 67% Merlot and 33% Cabernet Franc, the Merlot and old vines were affected coulure so the yields are 30hl/ha. It has a light nose with fresh strawberry and orange rind scents. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins, cedar-tinged red berry fruit with a hint of white pepper on the finish. Classic in style but nuanced. Tasted April 2014.

A good effort from Chateau Nenin, which is owned by the proprietor of the well-known St.-Julien estate, Chateau Leoville Las Cases, the 2013 Nenin is a blend of 63% Merlot and 37% Cabernet Franc made from tiny yields of 30 hectoliters per hectare. The natural alcohol came in 13.3%. The wine exhibits pleasant notes of black currants, black cherries and mocha in its fruity, medium-bodied, well-balanced personality. No serious tannins interfere with its enjoyment. Drink it over the next 5-6 years.

The 2013 Nenin has a conservative, rather "serious" bouquet with broody, tertiary black fruit, the 33% Cabernet Franc imparting a slight cured meat accent. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannin, straightforward red berry fruit mixed with sea salt and a touch of dried orange peel. It is quite linear and slightly lean towards the finish, which is no surprise given the vintage, ensuring that this will be an early drinking Nenin to enjoy over the next 6-8 years.

(67% merlot and 33% cabernet franc, 3.65 g/l total acidity; pH 3.65; 30 h/h; 13% alcohol): Vivid ruby. Enticing red fruit and floral aromas and flavors are supported by lively acids and silky tannins. The persistent finish showcases repeating floral and dark berry nuances. A much more refined Nenin than usual, with the largest percentage of cab franc I recall for this property (the 2012 blend had 30% of this variety, but the cabernet franc presence marked the wine less that year than it does in 2013). This is also a very good example of how eliminating lower-quality merlot from the final blend really was the right thing to do; in 2013 at least, there is really no comparison possible between this wine and La Fugue, the estate's much less interesting second wine. A very successful, less chunky Nenin.

The 2013 Nénin has a light, slightly green bouquet that never gets out of second gear and lacks fruit intensity. The palate is defined by rustic, dry tannin, a little green around the edges, with a tapered and rather dilute finish. Drink this soon.

Dark red cherries, plums, licorice, menthol and smoke all meld together in the 2013 Nenin. An attractive, mid-weight red, the 2013 offers good depth, balance and silkiness. Sweet, floral overtones emerge on the expressive finish.

About the Producer

A terroir in the very heart of the Pomerol appellation... Chateau Nénin is one of the most beautiful estates in the appellation. The Grand Vin du Château Nénin is produced on the 8 hectares of the best clay and gravel parcels of the famous Pomerol Plateau. As soon as he bought the estate in 1997, Jean-Hubert Delon immediately undertook major work. Aware of the extraordinary potential of this estate, the vineyard was extensively restructured with new parcels planted with massale selection of the Cabernet Francs from the Léoville Las Cases enclosure. The production equipment have been completely rethought, extended and developed in order to produce the best wines out of the splendid grapes born on this exceptional terroir.
