The 2005 Nenin is a pleasant, chunky, monolithic style of Pomerol, with excellent density, purity, and earthy, spicy blackcurrant and black cherry fruit. The tannins are well-integrated and the wine should easily last another 10-20 years.

This deep ruby/purple/plum-colored, powerful (14.2% alcohol) Pomerol was fashioned from a blend of 74% Merlot and 26% Cabernet Franc. One of the fattest Nenins yet made, it possesses supple tannin super-imposed with a Medoc structure, not surprising in view of the fact that this Pomerol is made by the same classic winemaking team responsible for Leoville Las-Cases. The 2005 Nenin exhibits plenty of sweet black cherry and plum-like fruit with a kirsch liqueur-like thickness. The tannins suggest it will require 4-5 years of cellaring, and should keep for 20-25 years.

A restrained nose of black cherry and tar. Sullen at the moment. The palate is very tannic and tough, quite earthy with good grip. A masculine Pomerol that has a dry, foursquare finish. Good but not great. Tasted July 2006.

This has really improved since en primeur. The nose is close at first but very pure and focused with scents of black cherries, a touch of wild mint. Great clarity and well-integrated new oak. The palate is velvety on the entry, cohesive with fine, almost filigree tannins. Elegant and feminine for Nenin with vibrant acidity and a touch of blueberry on the aftertaste. Good potential. I will watch this one closely. Drink 2010-2025. Tasted October 2007.

A deep purple/ruby hue. The nose is quite fresh and floral with good definition. Blueberry and cassis with violets (is this a Margaux???) The palate is well-balanced, full-bodied with firm tannins. A little coarse on the finish, with lingering plump ripe blackberry and plum. Attractive, though lacking a little personality. Tasted April 2006.

A strong effort from Leoville Las-Cases’ winemaking team, the powerful 2005 Nenin (14.2% alcohol) was created from a blend of 74% Merlot and 26% Cabernet Franc. Only 41% of the production was used. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by sweet cranberry, black cherry, and cassis fruit, impressive intensity, full body, low acidity, ripe tannin, and plenty of power and length. Although somewhat monolithic, it should develop additional nuances with 3-4 years of bottle age. It will last for two decades.

Not surprisingly given the ownership by the Delon family (who also own Las Cases), Nenin always has a Medoc structure super-imposed on the ripe Merlot (75% of the blend, with the balance Cabernet Franc). The strong 2005 exhibits notes of sweet black cherries, licorice, and caramel in its medium to full-bodied, structured personality. It requires 5-7 years of cellaring, and should keep for two decades or more.

The Châtean Nénin 2005 is flamboyant and vivacious on the nose with red cherries, pomegranate, leather and a light marine influence. This let's it all hang out there. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe tannin, quite animally in style, a little feral with an easy-going, slightly savoury finish. This is just beginning to drink now and should give 15 or 20 years of pleasure.

A complete and sexy wine with very polished and refined tannins yet there’s an energy and posture that gives the wine such intrigue. Buy it.

About the Producer

A terroir in the very heart of the Pomerol appellation... Chateau Nénin is one of the most beautiful estates in the appellation. The Grand Vin du Château Nénin is produced on the 8 hectares of the best clay and gravel parcels of the famous Pomerol Plateau. As soon as he bought the estate in 1997, Jean-Hubert Delon immediately undertook major work. Aware of the extraordinary potential of this estate, the vineyard was extensively restructured with new parcels planted with massale selection of the Cabernet Francs from the Léoville Las Cases enclosure. The production equipment have been completely rethought, extended and developed in order to produce the best wines out of the splendid grapes born on this exceptional terroir.
