This controversial (only because of its high quality and the fact that its makers emanate from St.-Emilion) garage wine operation in Margaux is making brilliant wines thanks to the skills of husband and wife Murielle and Jean-Luc Thunevin. The saturated dense purple-colored 2001 boasts a beautiful nose of graphite, violets, black currants, and plums, medium body, great finesse and elegance, and a long, layered finish. It is a beauty! Anticipated maturity: 2005-2018.

In 2001, this new garage operation from Margaux has produced a worthy rival to their stunning 2000. A saturated purple color is accompanied by aromas of paper white narcissus, creme de cassis, and roasted espresso. This long, concentrated, impressive 2001 is medium to full-bodied, with admirable purity, underlying freshness, and delineation. This is a tour de force. It admirably demonstrates what can be accomplished by extraordinarily talented and passionate people with a heretofore unexploited terroir. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2018.

This small garage operation is run by Jean-Luc Thunevin and his partner, Murielle Andraud. The deep purple-colored 2001 reveals a lovely perfume of acacia flowers, melted licorice, graphite, creme de cassis, and blueberries. Medium-bodied with tremendous purity, a layered texture, it is surprisingly light on its feet. This brilliant example of terrific winemaking is one of the stars of the appellation in 2001. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2016.

About the Producer

When the first vintage wine was launched, there were only 2.5 hectares of vineyards. Later, Philippe Polcheron purchased another 1.5 hectares of vineyards. Today, the total vineyard area of the Marrocians is 4 hectares. The garden is planted with 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, with an average age of 25 years, harvested by hand. The vines are planted at a density of 10,000 plants/ha, but yields are only 2,500 litres/ha. The wines of Château Maroga are usually vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel barrels, followed by Malolactic Fermentation in wooden barrels. The real wines are all aged for 18 to 24 months in new French oak barrels before bottling, with an annual output of about 1,250 cases. The wines launched by the winery include Chateau Marojallia Clos Margalaine, Chateau Marojallia Benjamin De Margalaine, and Marojallia Clos Margalaine. Chateau Marojallia Rose De Margalaine. Although the distinctive winemaking concept of Chateau Maroga has been questioned by many local wineries, its excellent quality is the best proof.
