An intense black cherry nose. Powerful redcurrant, cherry fruits. Tight, backward and concentrated. Black pepper and charcoal. Firm but the tannins remain unobtrusive. More conservative than the 1994 but it just oozes class. Drink from 2008. Tasted April 2002.

This will be a top-notch 1997 red Hermitage, generous and user-friendly. The 1997's low acidity and super-ripeness will be appreciated by readers who like to drink these wines at an earlier age. The 1997 Hermitage is atypical in its friendliness and forward appeal. This dense purple-colored wine offers a gorgeous nose of blackberry fruit intertwined with cassis, minerals, dried herbs, and sweet foresty scents. Rich, medium to full-bodied, with beautifully integrated acidity and tannin. The fruit is gloriously ripe and rich, but the wine is accessible. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2025. The 1997 Hermitage rouge is unusual in its fruit-forward, user-friendly style. The color is a dense ruby/purple. The gorgeous, evolved bouquet of cassis, minerals, herbs, underbrush, and licorice is intense. Creamy-textured, full-bodied, and opulent, this low acid, gloriously ripe, layered 1997 can be drunk now, but promises to be even better with another 5-6 years of cellaring; it will last for 20-25 years.
