This saturated, dark-colored wine displays an expressive nose of massively sweet and intense cherries that is followed by an oily-textured, mouth-coating, profound, and powerful character. Layer upon layer of black cherries, Asian spices, dried (almost stewed) prunes, cassis, and blackberries can be found in this majestic and masculine wine's flavor profile, as well as in its magnificently long finish. This offering's huge fruit flavors come across as almost jammy yet precisely focused, an extraordinary combination! Its firm and muscular structure will require some cellaring patience. Projected maturity: 2006-2014. Importers: Martine's Wines, Inc., San Rafael, CA; tel (415) 485-1800, and Paterno Imports, Chicago, IL; tel (847) 604-8900.

A ruby core with deep brick rim. A very complex, engaging nose with sublime delineation and clarity, scents of limestone, wet stones, blackberry leaf and a touch of sweet blueberry. Subdued at first but really blossoms in the glass with aeration. The full-bodied palate is superbly balanced, very minerally and like the 2001 from Anne Gros, as an unerring symmetry about it. Very elegant and powerful with blueberry and a touch of black truffle on the long finish. Long-term wine. Drinking 2012-2030. Tasted November 2006.

The sweet perfume, talcum powder, and cherry juice-scented 1996 Richebourg has a dark ruby/purple color. This extraordinary wine has a full body, immense richness, and a classy, powerful, satin-textured core of red currants, black cherries, spices, and blackberries. It is highly-structured and has copious tannins, yet they are enveloped in dense, thick fruit. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2015.
