Tasting notes

This medium-to-dark ruby-colored wine displays aromas of red cherries, currants, candied orange peels, and smoky bacon. This medium-to-full-bodied, expansive, broad, and oily-textured wine has admirable concentration, focus, and intensity. Its complex flavor profile is composed of hot stones, minerals, sweet red fruits, and fresh herbs. I was also impressed with this offering's admirable finish and soft, fat tannins. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2008. Importer: Peter Weygandt, Weygandt-Metzler, Unionville, PA; tel. (610) 486-0800.

The spice- and black, stony, fruit-scented 1996 Clos des Lambrays possesses lovely freshness to its otherwise rich and flavorful character. It saturates the palate with roasted blackberry flavors, cumin, juniper berries, and cigar box-like flavors. This medium to full-bodied, structured, and complex wine also offers an admirably long and well-focused finish. Projected maturity: 2004-2012+. Importer: Weygandt-Metzler, Peter Weygandt, Unionville, PA; tel (610) 486-0800.

The 1996 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru served from magnum, is actually the first time that I had tasted this wine. It feels stemmy and a little green on the nose as I expected. It is certainly very "old school". Structured and quite masculine on the palate, this Clos des Lambrays is endowed with sturdy dry tannin, the rather obdurate structure that typifies and mars this Burgundy vintage. I wonder if this is already drying out on the finish? Tasted at Goedhuis's Burgundy tasting at Vintners Hall.

About the Producer

At the heart and the summit of the estate visitors will find the eponymous Clos. There are also two plots of the Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru and four plots of the Morey-Saint-Denis village, all of them planted with Pinot noir. With the acquisition of a few “ouvrées” of Chardonnay of two “Climats” classified as Premier Cru in Puligny-Montrachet, les Folatières and the Clos du Cailleret, the estate is now complete. The estate also boasts a castle and its ancient cellar, dating back to the seventeenth century, and of one of the most beautiful gardens of the region. The garden features a three hundred year old cedar as well as orchids and a collection of roses. This classical beauty of the grounds contribute heavily to the wine’s aesthetic qualities.
