The 2014 Richebourg Grand Cru is a wine from the soil. Here there are fleeting glimpses of woodland and mulch-like undergrowth, something almost autumnal that infuses the very pure black and red fruit. The palate is very harmonious, even more so than the Romanée-Saint-Vivant, woven with extremely fine tannins. It is extremely focused and it fans out theatrically on the finish. It is a testament to how much the domaine has improved their Richebourg in recent years. It should be stunning once in bottle.

The 2014 Richebourg Grand Cru was picked on 20 and 21 September at 29.75 hectoliters per hectare. This has a gorgeous, flamboyant, vivacious bouquet with blossoming red cherries, crushed strawberry, less undergrowth scents compared to the showing in barrel, replaced by pressed rose petal notes. There is wonderful delineation and exuberance here. The palate is medium-bodied with a lively, spicy, white pepper-tinged entry, just a faint hint of black truffle tincturing the dark berry fruit. There is superb backbone and density here, a Richebourg delivering on its promise from barrel, plus it comes armed with an extraordinarily long aftertaste that evokes marine-like images, something wild and estuarine. While not as flattering as the Romanée-Saint-Vivant at the moment, just wait ten years. 1,160 cases produced. Tasted February 2017.

Full, deep red. Wonderfully sappy, floral nose shows more red fruits than black, along with complementary oak spices. Tactile, salty and sharply delineated, conveying outstanding lift to its classically dry flavors of red berries and spices. Obviously a very young wine and yet there's nothing brutal about it even today; in fact, this is more harmonious in the early going than the RSV. The very long, broad, slowly rising finish really saturates the palate and resounds with sappy spices.

Bright, dark red. Reticent nose opened with aeration to reveal aromas of black raspberry, redcurrant, smoky minerality and underbrush; one smells the sweetness and concentration of tiny berries. Very pure and penetrating on the palate, offering an exhilarating balance between sucrosité and vibrant acidity. A real blast of crushed red berries and cherry in the glass, enlivened by piquant accents of pepper and spices from clever use of the stems. Perhaps less brawny than usual for this wine at this early stage of its development but this wonderfully incisive grand cru nonetheless possesses serious tannic clout to support a graceful evolution in bottle.

About the Producer

The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti or DRC is one of the most prestigious wine estates in the world with 25.5 hectares mostly in Vosne-Romanée on the route des Grands Crus in the vineyards of the Côte de Nuits of the Burgundy vineyards (named after the 1.8 hectare Clos de la Romanée-Conti, one of the most prestigious mythical grands crus in the world). The civil company of the same name was founded in 1942 by Edmond Gaudin de Villaine. It is now co-managed for their heir family by the winegrowers Aubert de Villaine and Perrine Fenal.
