The Richebourg is enormous in an old, heavyweight style. It is a tannic, relatively closed wine, with a broodingly deep color, and sensational depth and length. It would be a crime to drink it before 1992-1995, and it will last two decades. This fabled estate has had a brilliant track record since 1978. Lalou Bize-Leroy and Aubert de Villaine seem to have everything tightly within their grasps, so it is unlikely that some of the lapses in quality control that occurred previously will resurface. I am sure they still cannot understand why their estate is so frequently singled out for malicious attacks, but no one should have any trouble appreciating the domaine's 1985s, which are their best wines in decades, even surpassing their sensational 1978s. The problem is coming up with the cash to finance them. The wines, aged in 100% new oak, are never filtered.

Quite a mature hue with a distinct tawny rim. Another inescapably pellucid nose with brilliant definition. Amazing minerality, oyster shell notes with a touch of damp earth. Just soars from the glass. The palate is focused, harmonious with filigree tannins. Simply caresses the palate. Not a powerful wine and there hardly seems any oak on it. A little sweeter than the RSV 1990. The finish is incredibly long with a hint of white pepper and bacon fat. An incredibly fine wine that is only just getting into its stride. Tasted July 2005.

About the Producer

The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti or DRC is one of the most prestigious wine estates in the world with 25.5 hectares mostly in Vosne-Romanée on the route des Grands Crus in the vineyards of the Côte de Nuits of the Burgundy vineyards (named after the 1.8 hectare Clos de la Romanée-Conti, one of the most prestigious mythical grands crus in the world). The civil company of the same name was founded in 1942 by Edmond Gaudin de Villaine. It is now co-managed for their heir family by the winegrowers Aubert de Villaine and Perrine Fenal.
