Tasting notes

Light green tints in the glass, the Domaine de Chevalier 2000 has opened up on the nose over the last couple of years with subtle notes of passion fruit, Kaffir lime, white peach and a touch of vanilla. The Semillon seems to be taking more of a central role, the oak still needing further bottle age to fully integrate on the finish. This is a very fine white Domaine de Chevalier that would benefit another couple of years in bottle. Tasted November 2010.

One of the best dry whites of the vintage, the 2000 offers up notes of lanolin, citrus, grapefruit, smoke, and minerals with notions of toasty wood in the background. This medium to full-bodied, deep, concentrated, pure, intense effort is a success for the vintage. It should hit its peak in 5-6 years and last for two decades.

Surpassing both the 1980 and 1990 Blanc served alongside, the Domaine de Chevalier 2000 has a sophisticated bouquet with touches of lavender, citrus peel, crushed stone and buttercup. It is lively and fresh. The palate has a lovely, mineral-rich core with a strong citric thread – hints of white peach, rhubarb and ginger towards the finish now that the oak is fully integrated. Wonderful! Drink now-2025. Tasted November 2012.

Far nose is more closed than Carbonnieux Blanc. Quite grassy. Dumb. Palate: fresh lime and apples. Vigorous. Good acidity, quite refined and classy. Fine minerally finish with integrated creamy oak. Excellent. Tasted November 2002.

Tasted at the chateau. This is just a little tight on the nose but gradually reveals some lovely, ripe passion fruit, white peach and apple-blossom aromas. The palate is very well balanced with good acidity, perhaps not quite as focused as I would prefer, surprisingly with vestiges of some unresolved new oak. But it has great persistency with subtle hints of grapefruit and passion fruit towards the finish. Excellent, but give it more time. Drink 2012-2020. Tasted September 2008.
