Served at dinner at Domaine de Chevalier. The ’90 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc has a fresh, well-defined nose with honeycomb, frangipane and a faint scent of shellfish. The palate is off-dry with racy acidity, quite nutty and spice with a finish that reminds me of a Beaumes de Venise! It lacks the sparkle and clarity of great vintages of Domaine de Chevalier Blanc, but still has modest appeal. Drink now-2017. Tasted April 2010.

This is far better than the previous bottle of 1990 Blanc. Here is has a gorgeous bouquet with effervescent orange blossom, lemon thyme and that background scent of shellfish. It is far more vivacious than I recall. The palate is very well balanced with crisp citrus fruit – although it is not as compelling as the aromatics and indeed, not as poised as the millennial offering. Still, it is powerful and spicy (recalling that Beaumes de Venise tincture) and will drink well for another decade, possibly more. Drink now-2022. Tasted November 2012.

Although somewhat monolithic, the 1990 Domaine de Chevalier blanc is still a relatively young dry white. It displays a hint of lemon zest, orange blossom, figs, and melons. Medium-bodied and austere, but reasonably long in the finish, it is hard to know in what direction it will go as it does not appear to possess the delineation of the great vintages. Anticipated maturity: now-2012. Last tasted, 6/02.
