Tasting notes

Reviewed by: Neal Martin
A huge extraction on the nose with oodles of sweet blueberry and cassis. A little over-powering. A bold, extrovert Camensac, yet it tastes a little overdone and lacks some typicity. Sweet cherry on the finish. Needs to calm down because it tastes like a New World wine at the moment. Tasted April 2006.

Tasted at BBR’s 2005/2009 tasting in London. This is a better example of Camensac compared to initial offering. The nose is a little blurred dark red fruit, plum, cranberry and raspberry. The palate is medium-bodied with powdery tannins on the entry, good acidity and a foursquare finish. Very backward and it does not have the harmony or length of Cantemerle. Tasted July 2011.

Tasted single blind at Southwold. The nose is tight, subdued at first, with notes of cedar, dark cherry and a hint of sloes, perhaps a touch of bretty? The palate is full-bodied with good weight, chewy tannins with sharp acidity. It lacks the harmony of a great 2005, quite meaty towards the austere, almost foursquare finish. I expected a little more – this Camensac seems to be “over-excited” by the vintage and dropped the ball! Drink now-2014. Tasted January 2009.

Space limitations did not allow complete tasting notes for this Grand Cru Classe, but 2005 is the finest vintage for these wines since 1982. The range of scores for these wines should give readers an idea of just how consistent this vintage is at this level. Given the style of the vintage, most of these wines should be accessible young yet evolve for a decade or more because of their concentration and tannic structure.
