A monumental wine that has gained weight considerably, the 2000 Clos l'Eglise seems to be every bit as powerful, rich, and potentially complex as the surreal 1998, which also seems to be growing in stature in the bottle. Deep ruby/purple, with a nose of cocoa, toffee, plum, fig, and blackberry, the wine has a full-bodied palate impression, with extraordinary purity, texture, and that multi-layered, highly nuanced finish that goes on for close to a minute. This wine has turned out to be spectacular, and even better from bottle than it was from cask. Nevertheless, it is a wine that will require more patience than the 1998. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2025. Kudos!

The 2000 possesses great intensity and massive concentration, yet is extremely light and delicate. The opaque purple color is followed by a compelling effort displaying surreal levels of extract and richness as well as a phenomenally complex bouquet of blueberry liqueur, mocha, cigar smoke, new saddle leather, plums, and roasted nuts. Amazingly pure, textured, and voluptuous, with moderately high tannin in the finish, this knock-out 2000 will be at its finest between 2006-2025.

Seven years ago I said this was a monumental wine, and at two different recent tastings, it was a true star of the vintage. Its stunning dark plum color offers up notes of caramelized red and black fruits, toffee, smoke, Asian plum sauce, sweet cherries, chocolate, and espresso. Its spectacular aromatics do not disappoint on the palate, as this multi-dimensional, highly complex, opulent wine seems to have hit a magical point in its evolution. Full-bodied, and concentrated, there is no issue with drinking this dazzling effort now, but those who own it can certainly cellar it for another 15 or more years. Bravo!

A prodigious effort from a very good to excellent rather than outstanding vintage for Pomerol, Clos l'Eglise is one of the candidates for the Pomerol of the vintage. A great deal of credit as well as appreciation should be given to the proprietor, the Cathiard-Garcin family, who has made immense investments in this property in order to elevate it to the pinnacle of Pomerol. They have succeeded in producing a complex, concentrated 2000 Clos l'Eglise. This forward effort offers sumptuous aromas of mocha, cigar tobacco, leather, blueberries, plums, and kirsch. Opulent, concentrated, full-bodied, savory, and thick, it possesses a voluptuous texture as well as a stunningly pure finish. For drinking over the next 10-15 years, it represents a terrific choice. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2020.

The Clos l’Eglise 2000 is a limpid dark ruby colour. The nose is reticent at first so minutes of coaxing is needed but after 30 minutes with exuberant kirsch and orange kirsch. The palate is full-bodied, fleshy on the entry, rounded and voluptuous, creamy in texture: pure black cherry fruits mixed with touches of blueberry and redcurrant. Voluminous on the finish, but backward and sultry at first but the opening up to reveal kirsch, orange zest and cassis. It just lacks a little definition on the finish when compared to other propitious vintages such as the 2005 and 2009. Tasted May 2009.

This is a ripe and intense red with a layered and intense character of chocolate and dried tomatoes. Full-bodied, layered and spicy with cloves and dried thyme. Very flavorful.
