Tasting notes

The 1998's raw materials were rich and concentrated. The wine is extremely low in acidity, but that should not bother anybody who wants to drink the wine in their lifetime. The color is an opaque black/purple, and the nose offers extraordinary notes of black cherry liqueur intermixed with blackberries, roasted coffee, cold steel, toasty new oak, and truffles. There is fabulous concentration, full body, and a wonderful mid-palate with explosive richness and sweetness. The finish lasts for over 40 seconds. The wine's low acidity, sweet tannin, and massive feel in the mouth promise a dazzling Pomerol, and the finest Clos l'Eglise has ever produced. Awesome! Anticipated maturity: 2002-2020.

Rich and full-bodied, with a fabulous mid-palate, this 1998 exhibits flamboyant aromas of smoke, jammy black and red fruits, mocha, and coffee. Medium to full-bodied, with more tannin, extract, and richness, it is a seamless, velvety-textured effort possessing surprising complexity for such a young wine. With a 40-second finish, this is the finest Clos l'Eglise to date, but I am convinced many compelling wines will emerge from this estate over coming years. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2018.

A lovely Pomerol. A distinct barnyardy, blackcurrant nose that is redolent of Eglise-Clinet. Concentrated, full bodied with firm grip and length. Toasty rich finish. Wonderful. Tasted January 2000.

Tasted at the Pomerol off-line at The Ledbury. Very interesting to juxtapose the Clos l’Eglise ’98 against its neighbour, l’Eglise-Clinet ’98. To be honest, I preferred Denis Durantou’s wine that showed more delineation and poise, but that should take nothing away from this superb Pomerol. It has a lush, rounded, sensuous nose of raspberry, wild strawberry, espresso and a touch of dark chocolate. The palate is smooth and rounded, very modern and plush, but just missing a little delineation and tension on the caramel-tinged finish. It has a hedonism that is missing on the l’Eglise-Clinet, but not the breeding or tension. Tasted September 2010.

The 1998 Clos l’Eglise is still deep in colour. It has a typical Pomerol 1998 nose with luscious, lifted minty bouquet. There is plenty of candied fruit, a touch of balsamic and crushed rose petals. The palate is full-bodied with low acidity: very caressing in the mouth but not quite delivering much in the way of typicity. It has a glycerine-rich, decadent finish that lacquers the mouth but it never really engages, an aloof, rather preening Pomerol that does not possess the tension or charm of recent vintages. Tasted May 2012.

A classic Pomerol, the 1998 boasts a superb, complex bouquet of mocha fudge, vanilla, black cherries, roasted coffee, smoke, and berries. The dazzlingly explosive aromatic display is followed by a creamy-textured, medium to full-bodied, beautifully-layered wine with no hard edges. A supple texture leads to a finish with notes of caramel and spice that lingers for over 40 seconds. This is a gorgeous, complex Pomerol. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2018.

Very fresh and intense with fantastic dark fruit and wet earth. Mushrooms, too. Full-bodied, powerful and extremely long. Such depth and freshness. A great wine. I remember this wine when it was young; it showed so much wood, but it has come together wonderfully. Bravo! Long future.
