Tasting notes

Good dark red-ruby. Musky aromas of blueberry, black cherry, cocoa and violet. Intensely flavored and serious, showing a seamless texture to the dark berry, vanilla and subtle floral flavors. This impressively concentrated and refined Pomerol finishes with sweet tannins and outstanding length. A knockout wine in a difficult vintage.

Dark ruby-red. Spicy, precise aromas of red cherry, cassis, vanilla and violet. Enters the mouth sweet and luscious, with very good intensity to the red and black fruit flavors. The finish features rising but smooth tannins and a repeating note of violet. Another wine from Helene Garcin that seems to be less extracted and needlessly massive than usual, and it's a major success for the vintage.

The 2011 Clos l’Eglise has a fresh bouquet, light but focused, red berry fruit laced with leather, mint and fleeting glimpses of orange rind. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, quite harmonious with fine weight, and slightly savory red fruit. It lacks a bit of persistency on the finish, but otherwise this represents a very commendable take on a more challenging vintage. Tasted at the Clos l’Eglise vertical.

The 2011 Clos l'Eglise has an attractive bouquet with leather, mulberry and undergrowth scents, gentle yet showing more fruité than its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, cohesive and with impressive weight on the finish, a dash of white pepper and clove lingering on the aftertaste, this is a commendable 2011 that is maturing with grace. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting.

Another beautiful wine from the Garcin family, Clos l’Eglise, which had been a moribund estate for decades, leaped to the forefront in the late nineties where it has remained ever since. The dense ruby/purple-hued, medium-bodied 2011 possesses abundant notes of sweet black cherries, licorice and plums as well as impressive purity, texture and length. It should be at its peak in 2-3 years and last for 12-15. Usually, this is a blend of 80+% Merlot and the balance Cabernet Franc.

Tasted at the Cercle de Rive Droite (from new bottles that I requested.) The Clos l’Eglise has a sorbet-like freshness on the nose. It is probably unfair to compare it to the outstanding 2010, but it is certainly lighter and not as complex, yet very well delineated. The palate is medium-bodied with attractive, slightly chewy tannins and very well judged acidity, rendering this a harmonious Pomerol that does not have any intention of outdoing the 2010. It is a little broody on the finish but it should turn out to be a “solid” Pomerol. Tasted April 2012.

A strong effort from this estate situated near the small church in Pomerol, the 2011 Clos l’Eglise displays a healthy dense ruby/purple color along with fleshy black cherry and black raspberry aromas intermixed with notions of barrique, earth and spice. Medium to full-bodied, pure and savory, this delicious fruit-forward effort reveals surprising flesh as well as length. Drink it over the next 10-15 years.

This is a tannic and tight 2011 with linear drive and focus. Violets and black olives, but crushed-stone and berry undertones, too. Medium to full body. Bright finish. Just coming around now.
