Description
Chateau Latour is among the First Growth properties classified in the Bordeaux 1855 Classification. The estate is situated in the southern portion of Pauillac, bordering St. Julien and the Gironde estuary. Latour is considered one of the longest-lasting First Growths, reflecting its high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. Chateau Latour has an almost unequaled track record for producing stunning wines that age and evolve for decades, if not generations.

Tasted at the Fine Wine Experience 1962 Bordeaux horizontal. Moderate Very deep colour. It has a very intense, rich, almost decadent nose with black cherries, plum, a touch of creme brulee, not quite as delineated as the sensational bottle at the Latour vertical in 2005. The palate is full-bodied with dense tannins, real structure and forcefulness, touch of dried blood and tart red strawberry on the finish. But overall, not quite as refined as a bottle would be in pristine condition. Yet still a “monster” of a wine. Tasted March 2010.

Tasted three times between 2000 and 2003, one bottle a little dry but the others absolutely divine, one of which reminded me of Latour 1959 with less dimension. A glorious bottle at the Latour vertical in December 2004. Deep garnet core, very clear. A warm sensuous, sweet nose of black cherry, melted dark chocolate and pencil lead. Black truffles developing on acquaintance. Very smooth entry. Plush velvet texture. Wonderful balanced, exquisite and refined. Very fresh with seamless tannins and great fruit concentration. Cedar, chocolate, earthy and truffles. So, so graceful and elegant. The kind of wine you could drink all night. Pure nectar.

Latour, once again, produced one of the great wines of the vintage. This is a wine that seemingly has gotten more powerful, and put on weight, richness, and complexity with age. The color is a murky dark garnet with very little lightening at the edge. The fabulous nose may not be as exotic as the 1962 Mouton-Rothschild or as compellingly perfumed as the 1962 Lafite-Rothschild, but it exhibits plenty of intense sweet fruit, a roasted character, and attractive truffle scents in the background. The wine is a rich, heavy-weight, full-bodied style of Latour with exceptional extraction, a thick, glycerin-endowed palate, and a stunningly long finish. Still extraordinarily vibrant, it is capable of lasting another 20+ years. Anticipated maturity: Now-2015. Last tasted 1/97

Latour continues to be one of the great vintages for this chateau. A dense opaque garnet color reveals amber at the edge, as well as an incredible perfume of cedar wood, balsam, coffee, black fruits, leather, and cigar smoke. The wine is supple and full-bodied, with sweet tannin, glorious levels of fruit and extract, abundant glycerin, and a seductive, truffle-flavored finish. While it has been drinkable for two decades, it is capable of lasting another 20 years. It is a perfectly balanced, exciting Latour that remains undervalued as well as underrated.
