The 1989 is surprisingly full-bodied for a de Sales, with a deep, intense, black cherry-scented bouquet intertwined with the scents of vanillin and toast. In the mouth, the wine displays fine ripeness, full body, a heady alcohol content, and a long, tannic, rich finish. Anticipated maturity: Now-2003.

The 1989 promises to be one of the biggest wines made by this chateau. It not only compares favorably to their excellent 1982 (which is now drinking extremely well), but may ultimately prove to be superior. It is surprisingly full-bodied for a de Sales, with a deep, intense, black cherry-scented bouquet intertwined with the scents of vanillin and toast. In the mouth, the wine displays the exceptional ripeness that is typical of so many wines from this vintage, full body, a heady alcohol content, and a long, tannic, rich finish. Most wines from de Sales are drinkable upon release, and no doubt the 1989 will also have its admirers, but it might be one de Sales that is capable of lasting beyond a decade. Anticipated maturity: 1993-2003. Tasted five times. Consistent notes.
