The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon brings together so many of the elements that make Screaming Eagle such a great and distinctive wine. Crushed rocks, graphite, menthol, plums, black cherries and mint all jump from the glass. Power, structure and finesse all come together in this remarkably vivid, dazzling wine. Rain in spring caused a poor set, which lowered yields dramatically, intensifying all of the sensations in the glass. Today, the 2010 is utterly head spinning. In 2010, Screaming Eagle is a bit lower in Cabernet Sauvignon and higher in Merlot than normal. The blend is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2030. I have had a number of fabulous tastings at Screaming Eagle, but this was one of the most memorable. The biggest news at Screaming Eagle is the release of a second wine, a project that has been in the works for a number of years. Owner Stan Kroenke and his team wanted to make sure their new wine was up to the estate’s standards, and have only released the first vintages over the last few months. I tasted all four vintages of Screaming Eagle’s second label, Second Flight, next to Screaming Eagle itself, which allowed for a fascinating set of comparisons of both wines across a number of vintages. Like its big brother, Second Flight is a Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine, but here the Merlot plays a much more significant role. Regardless, what comes through most is the signature of these sites as seen through the lenses of the respective vintages. Readers might also enjoy taking a look at a recent video I shot with Winemaker Nic Gislason during the 2012 harvest that we recently posted on our site. Tel. (707) 944-0749

Utter perfection, the 2010 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon (a 610-case blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc; 14.5% natural alcohol) boasts a dense ruby/purple color along with a staggering bouquet of spring flowers, graphite, creme de cassis, kirsch, licorice and subtle toast in the background. Opulent and full-bodied with a multidimensional personality, gorgeous purity and a stunning, flawless texture, this spectacular wine is among the wines of the vintage. Under the ownership of Stan Kroenke, this vineyard has been replanted and a new cellar has been constructed. The production of Screaming Eagle has remained between 700-1,000 cases, and a second wine, the Second Flight, includes 520-800 cases. The introduction of a second wine is an attempt to keep Screaming Eagle at its mythical level of quality. This vineyard, situated on the valley floor at the Oakville Crossroads across the road from the Rudd Estate, encompasses 60 acres, but only a small percentage is used for these two cuvees. Based on the three vintages I tasted, it appears the Second Flight wines include much less Cabernet Sauvignon and more Merlot than the flagship Screaming Eagle. Tel. (707) 944-0749

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon bursts from the glass with an exotic combination of pure power and intensity. Plums, mocha, lavender, espresso, licorice and new leather all blossom in a brooding, imposing wine that is going to require quite a bit of patience. This is another huge, dark Screaming Eagle. Plums, smoke, licorice and melted road tar add complexity on a huge crescendo of exotic aromas and flavors. The 2010 is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc.

(75% cabernet sauvignon, 16% merlot and 9% cabernet franc; the harvest here ended on October 13, about two weeks later than usual): Brilliant ruby-red. Urgent aromas of crushed boysenberry, wild herbs, licorice and spearmint are complemented by sexy oak tones. Densely packed and electric, with great energy to the highly concentrated, pliant flavors of black fruits, cocoa powder and flowers. Still quite youthfully backward, but the inexorable slowly mounting finish and big but noble tannins suggest a long and glorious evolution in bottle. Owing to the small clusters, thick skins and concentration of tannins, this wine got a longer elevage than usual, with the bottling done at the end of November 2012.

(76% cabernet sauvignon, 14% merlot and 10% cabernet franc): Bright, deep ruby. Terrific verve to the aromas of boysenberry, blackberry, blueberry, mint and graphite. Juicy, penetrating and very pure, with black fruit, mineral and mint flavors lifted by a good dose of the estate's wonderfully floral merlot. The firm acidity conveys an almost peppery impression. Finishes seriously tannic, structured and very long, with a lingering peppery quality. A tad lower in alcohol and pH than the 2009, and likely to require extended aging upon release. But this site-driven wine should be brilliantly delineated.

About the Producer

Screaming Eagle Winery makes wine in a tiny stone winery. The winery is located on a stone hill overlooking the valley. Since Phillips first sold wine in 1992, the wines produced by Screaming Eagle Winery have been called the representative of limited production, high quality and super expensive California wine. Phillips adheres to the "less is more" philosophy of winemaking. She is a perfectionist, and also brings this "pursuit of perfection" spirit to wine making, using the "garage wine" method. When the grapes are ripe, she carefully selects the most ripe and flawless grapes to make top-quality wines. The wine produced by Screaming Eagle Winery is indeed worthy of the title of "garage wine". The wine is deep maroon color, exudes strong fruity and explosive aromas of berries, coffee, fur, wild mushrooms and flowers. It needs to be aged for 15 years. Only started drinking in 20 years. Screaming Eagle Winery does not accept orders from customers, and can only make reservations through the Internet. After making reservations, they often have to wait in line for several years before they can get their desired wines. Screaming Eagle Winery is the most expensive wine in Napa Valley. Ms Phillips summed up her excellence beautifully: "I just follow my heart and I always feel like I'm doing what I really love. If I do it, great; if No, at least I'm enjoying my life. That's the philosophy I've always embraced."
