Tasting notes

A very sweet fig-tinged nose with a touch of tinned prune. A rather strained palate, lacking a little cohesion with a rather fleshy, corpulent finish. Good but not great. Tasted October 2007.

A deep plum/ruby color is accompanied by a sweet perfume of espresso intermixed with chocolate, earth, and black cherries. Supple-textured, with sweet tannin, medium to full body, and a long, lush, fleshy finish, it is a sexy example to drink over the next 6-8 years.

The 2001 Roc de Cambes is a successful effort from this Cotes de Bourg overachiever owned by Francois Mitjavile. The wine reveals this estate's tell-tale characteristics of melted chocolate, plums, figs, and pruny ripeness, along with zesty acidity, vibrancy, and definition. It is a plump, delicious offering to enjoy during its first 5-7 years of life.

A sensational sleeper of the vintage, this superstar of the Cotes de Bourg appellation, owned by Francois Mitjavile, boasts a dense purple color as well as a big, sweet, seductive bouquet of melted chocolate, licorice, smoke, and jammy black cherry fruit. Flashy, seductive, and medium-bodied, with loads of ripeness in addition to a plush texture, it should be drunk over the next 5-6 years, although it may last longer.
About the Producer
This is his property in the Côtes de Bourg, a vineyard reminiscent of Tertre Roteboeuf, being as it is, a natural amphitheatre with a perfect aspect overlooking the Gironde River. It comprises fourteen hectares of old vines planted on the most highly reputed slope of the Côtes (les Croutes), where the heat of the sun on the slope is regulated by the effects of the estuary and cool clay/limestone soils. This makes for regular growth and wonderfully ripe, concentrated fruit. Essentially François Mitjavile’s approach was to coax optimal quality in a region with great, but often unrealised, potential. He made Roc de Cambes flourish. With his son Louis (now owner of L’Aurage) and his daughter Nina (increasingly at the helm) his experience and philosophy from St Emilion come into play here. Together they control vigour and pick only when the grapes are super-ripe. They have succeeded in creating a wine which has led to many an embarrassing moment at blind tastings when compared to received “great” wines, first growths included. Roc de Cambes has a wow factor in spades.
