I tasted from a barrel that Rostaing said represented something "close to the final blend" of the 2016 Cote Rotie Ampodium. This medium-bodied wine features classic notes of violets, spice and raspberries and has ample flesh covering its silky, tea-like backbone of ripe tannins. It should drink well young.

There are 20,000 bottles of Rostaing's 2016 Cote Rotie Ampodium, so it is the cuvée most consumers are likely to encounter. It's a fine example of the appellation, offering briary notes of ripe red fruit with spice and herb shadings. It's medium-bodied, silky and fine, with attractive notes of licorice and tea on the finish that give this entry-level wine more complexity than most.

Deep ruby. Expressive aromas of ripe blackberry, boysenberry, licorice and olive paste show very good clarity and pick up a smoky nuance as the wine stretches out. Juicy and energetic on the palate, offering concentrated black and blue fruit flavors complemented by a building floral pastille note. Shows noticeable weight on the broad, gently tannic finish, which echoes the dark berry and licorice notes.

Bright violet. Expressive black and blue fruit, floral pastille and peppery spice aromas display a bright mineral quality and a suggestion of woodsmoke. Intense blueberry and bitter cherry flavors show excellent clarity and spicy lift, picking up star anise and cola nuances on the back half. Delivers a serious punch of dark fruit flavor but comes off surprisingly lithe, and finishes with smooth tannins and strong tenacity.

About the Producer
Rene Rostaing is quite famous in the Cote-Rotie area of the North Rhone. In 1971, there were only 0.47 hectares of vineyards, distributed in Cote Blonde and La Landonne. After inheritance and harvesting in recent years, the winery's vineyards have reached 6 hectares, and he also has 0.2 hectares of vineyards in Condrieu. The winery has introduced high-tech equipment in recent years, which can automatically stir and mix the grapes and grape skins. The soaking time can be as long as three weeks, which is longer than the average winery time, and the temperature is automatically raised to about 37 degrees, allowing the grape juice to absorb For more grape color and tannin, filtering before bottling depends on the quality of the wine of the year. Rostaing's general-grade Cote-Rotie and Cote Blonde are completely de-stemmed, while La Landonne is 50% de-stemmed. In theory, the wine is stronger and more resistant to aging and has more tannins.
