Tasting notes

Exhibiting aromas of dark berries, plums, petals and burning embers, the 2022 Pibran is medium to full-bodied, taut and lively, with bright acids and a chalky finish. It should flesh out nicely with further élevage.

The 2022 Pibran offers up aromas of cherries, sweet berries and pencil shaving, followed by a medium-bodied, bright and chalky palate. It's a solid Pauillac.

The 2022 Pibran has a slightly showier bouquet than previous vintages, yet it feels more contained compared to its opulent showing from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with a brisk, sharp entry and a sweet core of fruit that doesn't quite gel as harmoniously as I would like. Not bad, though it needs to temper its exuberance.

Clear and structured Pibran with blackcurrants, dark cherries and orange peel aromas and flavors. Medium body. Firm finish. 55% merlot and 45% cabernet sauvignon.

This shows tapenade and some wood spices that aren’t yet fully integrated on the nose. Black cherries, black bean puree and dark currants too. Flavorful and medium- to full-bodied on the palate with firm tannins and a fine-grained finish. Give it at least two more years in bottle. Drink from 2028.

About the Producer

The birth of Chateau Pibran dates back to the start of the 20th century. The estate was bought in 1941 by Paul Pibran Billa. Paul Pibran Billa renamed the property, using his middle name of Pibran. From that day forward the estate was known as Chateau Pibran.Chateau Pibran was purchased by the AXA group in 1987 from the Billa family. At the time of the purchase, Jean Michel Cazes of Chateau Lynch Bages was placed in charge of managing the estate for AXA.In 2001, the AXA group enlarged the estate with the purchase of additional vines in Pauillac when they obtained the neighboring estate, Chateau La Tour Pibran from the Gounel family. The 17-hectare vineyard of Chateau Pibran is planted to 54% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1% Cabernet Franc. The Petit Verdot was removed and replaced by the Cabernet Franc. With that much Merlot planted in their vineyards, Chateau Pibran has perhaps the largest percentage of Merlot in Pauillac.
