The 2015 Pibran is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot, matured in 50% new oak for the next 18 months. It was picked between 21 September and 8 October. It has a precise, tightly wound bouquet at first, graphite-tinged black fruit gently unfurling with a suggestion of iodine in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, perhaps a little coarseness that will be abided by time, moderate depth leading to a classic, foursquare, tobacco-tinged finish. This is a slightly conservative Pibran, but stylish and sure to give 10-15 years of drinking pleasure.

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Pibran is a little reduced to begin, with black fruits and tar notions plus hints of dried herbs and chocolate. Medium-bodied with a great core of expressive fruit, it has grainy tannins and a refreshing finish.

The 2015 Pibran is one of the best vintages in recent years. It has a gorgeous bouquet of blackberry, wild strawberry and cold stone scents, developing veins of graphite with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin, very well-judged acidity and surprising backbone toward the finish, suggesting that this will be a long-term Pibran. Excellent. Tasted at the Pibran vertical at Château Pichon-Baron.

A very concise mid-weight wine that has attractive cherry and blackberry aromas and flavors arranged in a neatly presented frame of smooth tannins. Velvety finish and good depth. Try from 2021.

About the Producer

The birth of Chateau Pibran dates back to the start of the 20th century. The estate was bought in 1941 by Paul Pibran Billa. Paul Pibran Billa renamed the property, using his middle name of Pibran. From that day forward the estate was known as Chateau Pibran.Chateau Pibran was purchased by the AXA group in 1987 from the Billa family. At the time of the purchase, Jean Michel Cazes of Chateau Lynch Bages was placed in charge of managing the estate for AXA.In 2001, the AXA group enlarged the estate with the purchase of additional vines in Pauillac when they obtained the neighboring estate, Chateau La Tour Pibran from the Gounel family. The 17-hectare vineyard of Chateau Pibran is planted to 54% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1% Cabernet Franc. The Petit Verdot was removed and replaced by the Cabernet Franc. With that much Merlot planted in their vineyards, Chateau Pibran has perhaps the largest percentage of Merlot in Pauillac.
